Muhl signs 10 players for KCC women

Kim Muhl was not particularly happy with the women's basketball team he had at Kirkwood Community College this past season, claiming they were "dysfunctional" and a difficult group to coach.

He's done something about it.

Muhl has signed 10 new players for the 2013-14 campaign and might sign one or two more before the spring and summer are over.

"This next year's group, I'm excited about them," he said Monday in his office at Johnson Hall. "I like their accountability so far. They're really good about it."

Kirkwood compiled a 28-5 record this past season, won the ICCAC title and came within one victory of making the national tournament, but Muhl said it was a tough season.

At this point, only three players from this year's team will be returning next season with Mikayla Fallon, Haley Faber and Ariel Sneed. Sneed, a transfer from Illinois-Chicago, practiced with the Eagles this season but did not play.

The new recruiting class features six players from Illinois, three from Iowa and one from Nebraska. The group includes Danielle Wolfolk, a 5-foot-3 point guard who is a transfer from Eastern Illinois University.

Wolfolk will be a sophomore at Kirkwood. The other nine players will be freshmen. They are:

  • Hanna Haynes, 6-2, Keosaqua Van Buren
  • Katelynn Tuttle, 5-8, Pleasant Valley
  • Paige Bockhoelt, 5-11, Union of LaPorte City
  • Anna Martensen, 5-10, Belvidere North (Ill.)
  • Kirsten Larson, 5-10, Belvidere North (Ill.)
  • Zoe Kelso, 5-11, Rock Island Alleman (Ill.)
  • Cassidy Clark, 6-1, Orion (Ill.)
  • Cuyla Hall, 5-10, Oak Park (Ill.)
  • Taylor Silva, 5-5, Bellevue East (Neb.)

Haynes averaged 19.3 points, 12.4 rebounds and 5.8 blocks at Van Buren. Tuttle averaged 7.4 points and 3.1 rebounds at Pleasant Valley. Bockhoelt missed the season at Union due to a knee injury.

Larson averaged 15.1 points and 5.2 rebounds at Belvidere North and made 71 3-pointers. Martensen averaged 12.8 points and 6.9 rebounds at Belvidere North.

Clark avearged 19.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 5.8 blocks at Orion (Ill.).

Wolfolk averaged 14 points as a senior at Homewood-Flossmoor (Ill.) and appeared in 18 games as a freshman at Eastern Illinois.

Muhl said two players from this year's squad have found new teams for next year. Bianca Dufelmeier, a 5-7 guard, has accepted a scholarship from Alabama-Birmingham. Krissi Tow, a 6-foot forward from Xavier, has accepted an offer from the University of Tampa to join the team as an invited walk-on.
