Pairings set for football playoffs

High school football coaches, players and fans had an extended Friday night as many stayed up late to catch the first glimpse of the 2014 playoffs.

The IHSAA posted the pairings at approximately 2 a.m. Saturday morning.

One of the most intriguing matchups in Class 4A will send Coach Mike Morrissey and the Prairie Hawks against Pleasant Valley. Morrissey played his high school football at Pleasant Valley for his father, Ed Morrissey.

Here are all the Metro pairings for the first-round games, which will be played Wednesday night at 7 p.m.

+ Top-ranked Washington hosts Clinton at Kingston Stadium in Class 4A.
+ Linn-Mar hosts Davenport Central at Linn-Mar Stadium in Class 4A.
+ Xavier entertains Charles City at Saints Field in Class 3A.
+ Jefferson visits second-ranked Bettendorf in Class 4A.
+ Kennedy visits Muscatine in Class 4A.
+ Prairie travels to Pleasant Valley in Class 4A.

Jefferson lost to Linn-Mar Friday night 42-21, but still made the playoffs. The J-Hawks are not apologizing for the school's first Class 4A playoff appearance since 2006. They earned a fourth-place finish in District 5 thanks to Kennedy's 48-28 win over Waterloo West at Kingston Stadium.

Even though Kennedy (2-7, 2-3) lost a 27-24 overtime decision to the J-Hawks in the regular season, the point system used to break three-way ties gave the Cougars the No. 3 seed, leaving Jefferson (4-5, 2-3) at No. 4.

"It's not the same feeling as you get by winning a game," said J-Hawks quarterback Jesse Furrow, "but you take what you get and go from there."

Jefferson Coach Brian Webb said Jefferson is not simply happy with a playoff spot.

"We'll play anybody, anywhere," he said. "It doesn't matter whether it is Bettendorf, Pleasant Valley or Washington, we'll be ready to go," he said before the pairings were revealed.

"I think it is a success for our program to be in the playoffs," he continued. "The main thing is that people respect us now. If you are going to face us, you are going to have play hard because we're going to come at you and not ever quit."

Washington (9-0, 5-0 District 6), a 63-19 winner Friday night at Burlington, and No. 6 Linn-Mar (8-1, 5-0) are No. 1 seeds by virtue of winning district championships. Their opponents (Clinton and Davenport Central) are No. 4 seeds.

Prairie (4-5, 2-3) earned a No. 3 seed in District 6 with its 48-0 win over Ottumwa.

Xavier (6-3, 5-1) downed Marion, 37-6, on Friday to earn a No. 1 seed. Coach Duane Schulte's team tied with Solon and Western Dubuque for the Class 3A District 4 title, but got the top seed through a tiebreaker.

Marion (1-8, 0-6) was eliminated from contention prior to Friday's loss at Xavier.

All of the first-round games match No. 1 seeds against No. 4 and No. 2 seeds against No. 3 seeds.
