CLINTON - Sam Gibbons pitched a spectacular game for the Cedar Rapids Kernels Saturday night in their 2-0 victory over Clinton at Ashford University Field.

Gibbons allowed only one hit in eight innings and struck out a career-best 12 batters. He had a perfect game for 5 2/3 innings before Arby Fields reached first base on an infield single.

Gibbons, a 6-foot-4 right-hander from Australia, did not walk anyone and faced 25 batters in eight innings, just one over the minimum. He raised his record to 7-3 and lowered his ERA to 2.72.

The Minnesota Twins signed Gibbons as an international free agent in 2011.

Kernels relief pitcher Michael Theofanopoulos finished the one-hitter with a perfect frame in the bottom of the ninth for his first save.

The Midwest League game was tied, 0-0, heading into the top of the ninth inning. Edgar Corcino and T.J. White collected two-out singles for the Kernels and Brett Doe drove them in with a two-run double to left field.

The Kernels (71-53) and LumberKings (39-84) meet again Sunday at 2 p.m.
