Tiny Gorman makes big splash

Reagan Gorman stands out in a crowd of runners, but not because of her physical stature.

It's her talent, not her size.

"I'm 5-2," the Cedar Rapids Washington freshman said Saturday morning with a shy smile, "and I weigh about 85 or 90."

Good things come in small packages.

Gorman made a quick name for herself Saturday by finishing in second place out of 127 runners at the 31st Prairie Invitational cross country meet.

Iowa City West junior Gabby Skopec won the 5K race in 19 minutes, 26 seconds. Gorman placed second in 19:38 and Marion senior Maddie Bach took third in 19:43.

Iowa high school girls are running five kilometers for cross country races this year instead of the traditional 4K, making their events the same length as the boys.

"I like it," said Gorman. "I'm not very good at sprints, so it's nice."

She plans to run the 1500 and 3000 during the track season this spring. "I don't like the 800," she said. "Nothing short."

Gorman's older sister, Shannon, was a good distance runner for Washington a few years ago, but it appears Reagan might be able to surpass her accomplishments based on Saturday's performance.

Gorman was a major factor in middle school races before bursting onto the high school scene Saturday.

"The middle school races went well," she said. "In track I won all of the races I did. And in cross country I won most of them."

Bach, the third-place finisher Saturday, also welcomed the longer distance this season.

"I love it," she said. "I've been training 50 to 60 miles a week every single year and it's finally paying off. I'm so happy it's a 5K now.

"I never really was an 800 runner or even a miler," she said. "I've been running 5K's since I was nine. I always, always liked the longer distance."

Bach hopes to compete for the Class 3A state title this year in Iowa's second-largest class.

"That's the plan," she said. "It might be far-fetched, but I have big goals."

Iowa City West edged Waukee for the girls title, 63-76. Linn-Mar finished third.

Cedar Falls trimmed Prairie, 36-45, for the boys championship. Cedar Falls is ranked No.2 in Class 4A and Prairie is ranked No.1, but the Tigers won their first showdown of the season.

Sam Schillinger of Cedar Falls won the race in 16 minutes, 8 seconds. Tysen VanDraska of Prairie finished third in 16:28.
