Nunemaker wins Metro Spotlight Award

Tyler Nunemaker of Cedar Rapids Prairie is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Nunemaker, a senior quarterback, has played extremely well the last two weeks to help Prairie make the Class 4A playoffs. The Hawks have scored 101 points in their last two games with a 56-41 victory over Muscatine and a 45-20 conquest of Ottumwa.

Nunemaker completed all five of his passes against Muscatine for 155 yards and one touchdown. He also rushed for 109 yards and two touchdowns against the Muskies, giving him a rare double-double for a quarterback with more than 100 yards passing and 100 yards rushing in a single game.

Nunemaker followed that performance by hitting 11 of 14 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns against Ottumwa. He hit Joseph Meyer with a 29-yard TD strike and heaved a long pass to Jalen Rima for a 76-yard touchdown. Nunemaker also scored on a 6-yard run against the Bulldogs.

Nunemaker has done a good job of mastering the nuances in Prairie's complex offense under new head coach Mark Bliss. He has passed for 1,333 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 445 yards and four more TDs.

Nunemaker has completed 16 of 19 passes the last two games for 411 yards.

Prairie visits Iowa City West in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday night.
