Jared Eivins wins Metro Spotlight Award

Jared Eivins of Cedar Rapids Jefferson is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Eivins, a senior quarterback, had a big game Wednesday night when the J-Hawks defeated Dubuque Senior, 61-43, for their first victory in the playoffs since 1992.

Eivins carried the ball 12 times for 84 yards and four touchdowns. He also completed 6 of 10 passes for 172 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. All told, he collected 256 yards of total offense and five TDs.

Eivins scored on touchdown runs of 1, 4, 2 and 24 yards. He hit Valentino Green with a 31-yard touchdown pass.Jefferson scored 49 points in the second half, including 28 points in the fourth quarter, and collected 485 yards of total offense.

Eivins has completed 60.9 percent of his passes this season for 1,060 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also leads the J-Hawks in rushing with 646 yards and 13 touchdowns. All told, he's accounted for 25 touchdowns despite being hampered at times by a sore left shoulder.

Jefferson (7-3) will face Washington (9-1) in the second of the Class 4A playoffs Monday night at Kingston Stadium at approximately 8 p.m.
