Techau wins Metro Spotlight Award

Max Techau of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Techau, a 6-foot-7 junior, is a key member of the Xavier basketball team that is ranked No. 3 in Class 3A by the Associated Press with an 11-2 record.

Techau is averaging 15.0 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks for the Saints. He leads the entire Mississippi Valley Conference in blocked shots and leads the Mississippi Division in the MVC in scoring average with a slight edge on teammate Mitchell Burger.

Techau transferred from Kennedy to Xavier for his junior year in high school. He averaged 3.3 points and 2.0 rebounds last season for Kennedy when the Cougars reached the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state tournament.

Techau missed the first two games this season with an ankle injury. By coincidence, he played his first game for Xavier against Kennedy and had a fairly quiet outing with six points, three rebounds and two blocks in a setback.

Since then, Techau has scored in double figures in 10 straight games, with a career-high 23 points against Jefferson and 20 points against Waterloo West. He collected a double-double against Jefferson with 23 points and 10 rebounds and also had a career-best five blocks against the J-Hawks.

Techau had another double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds against Iowa City High and had an even bigger double-double with 15 points and a career-best 13 rebounds against Waterloo East Friday night.

Techau, who has quick moves around the basket, is shooting 61.7 percent from the field. He's shooting 6-for-11 on 3-pointers (54.3 percent) and is hitting 67.5 percent of his free throws.
