TOLEDO, Ohio -- The Kirkwood volleyball team received the No. 5 seed and will face host Owens Community College in the first round of the NJCAA Division II National Women's Volleyball Tournament when it opens Thursday.

Kirkwood (37-8) is making its second appearance in three years in the national tournament. The Eagles finished eighth in 2010.

Kirkwood plays Owens (35-9) at 2 p.m. (Iowa time) on Thursday. Owens is the host school of the tournament and received a No. 12 seed.

If Kirkwood wins it could face Iowa Central in the second round round. The Tritons (34-10) are seeded No. 4 and face No. 13 Monroe, N.Y. (35-5) in the opening round. A match with top seeded Cowley County, Kan. (35-0) looms in the semifinals. Cowley County is the defending national champion.

Kirkwood is bidding for its second national title. The Eagles won the crown in 2003.

The tournament runs through Saturday.
