VERO BEACH, Fla. -- The Kirkwood Community College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Massasoit (Mass.) Community College on Saturday in Florida.

The Eagles won the first game, 7-6, in eight innings and took the nightcap, 2-1, behind a strong pitching performance by Jean Carlos Rosario.

Kirkwood raised its record to 7-1 under first-year coach Todd Rima.

Jean Carlos Rodriguez led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single in a 6-6 game. Dennis Colon put down a sacrifice bunt, and Rodriguez scored all the way from first base with the winning run when the Massasoit catcher threw the ball into right field.

Wilfredo Feliz and Greg Brodzinski went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Kirkwood in the opener. Colon also drove in two runs.

Rosario pitched a complete game for the Eagles in the second game. He struck out nine batters and scattered five singles in seven innings.

 

Shawn Hagarty made a diving catch in left field for Kirkwood in the fourth inning with two outs and the bases loaded to save several runs. Brodzinski had two more hits for the Eagles in the nightcap.

Kirkwood will play UConn-Avery Point and Riverland (Minn.) Community College in single games on Sunday.
