Logemann sets KCC record with 19 K's

PDF

Amber Logemann struck out 21 batters in the Class 1A state championship game for Earlham High School last year, but the Cardinals lost 1-0 to Martensdale-St. Mary's in 11 innings. So there wasn't a whole lot to celebrate that day.

She tossed another gem Saturday for the Kirkwood Eagles and went home a winner.

Logemann set a school record with 19 strikeouts as Kirkwood outlasted Southwestern Community College, 2-1, in 13 innings on a cold, wet, dreary day at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids.

Logemann coasted to victories in her previous two outings when the ninth-ranked Eagles blasted Ellsworth and Iowa Central in five innings, but the talented righthander had to work overtime in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday.

"It's kind of nice to just keep going," she said. "I didn't know I had it in me, but if you need to do it, then get it done."

Kirkwood shortstop Leah Duffe ended the suspense (and the shivers) by ripping a walkoff home run with one out in the bottom of the 13th inning.

Kirkwood won the second game, 8-0, in six innings on a two-hitter by Sam Belz and a walkoff three-run double by catcher Krysta Tutsch to end the contest by the mercy rule.

Logemann and Southwestern pitcher Leah Kipfer engaged in a classic duel in the opener that kept going and going. Kipfer allowed only three hits in 13 innings and struck out 15 batters, but she was the hard-luck loser when Duffe connected.

Kipfer had a no-hitter for 7 1/3 innings.

Southwestern  (7-5, 1-3) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 10th inning, but Kirkwood tied the game in the bottom of the 10th thanks to two throwing errors by the visitors.

Duffe bats in the No.1 spot for the Eagles (18-3, 6-0) and is not a power hitter, but she walloped the first pitch she saw in the 13th inning over the fence in left-center field for her second home run of the season.

"Honestly, I thought it was going to be a line drive," she said. "I didn't know if it was going to go out or not, with the wind and the weather being like it is.

"Yeah, it felt good."

Duffe has been battling a sore arm, but she played all 19 innings in the field Saturday and made a series of sparkling plays.

"It was a little tender," she said, "but you just push through, take a little more Advil and you're ready to go."

Logemann said she could have pitched a few more innings, but is glad she didn't have to squeeze any more pitches out of her tired arm.

"I'd have to say it was really dead," she remarked.

Logemann was the captain of the all-tournament team at the state meet, an all-state selection and the Class 1A Pitcher of the Year. She also belonged to the National Honor Society at Earlham and was a Kirkwood Presidential Scholar this fall with a 4.0 GPA.

The Eagles swept ICCAC doubleheaders on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

Kirkwood Coach Joe Yegge said the old school record for most strikeouts in a single game was 18.

Kirkwood right fielder Kayla Tatge preserved a 0-0 shutout in the ninth inning of the opener when she gunned down a runner at the plate on a potential sacrifice fly. Tutsch applied a swipe tag to finish the play.
