Kernels make 4 roster moves

The Cedar Rapids Kernels made four roster moves Tuesday.

Three players are joining the Kernels from Extended Spring Training in Fort Myers, Fla. They are catcher Michael Quesada, outfielder Jeremias Pineda and righthanded pitcher Josue Montanez.

Outfielder Romy Jimenez has been assigned to Extended Spring Training, putting the roster at the 25-man limit. The Kernels had been playing with just 23 men on the roster in recent games.

Montanez appeared in two games for the Kernels in early April, posting a 3.38 ERA in 2.2 innings. The Twins selected Montanez in the 15th round of the 2011 First Year Player Draft from Miami Dade Community College South.

Montanez spent 2012 with the GCL Twins where he posted a 2-0 record and 0.36 ERA in eight games (four starts), allowing 13 hits and five runs (one earned) over 25 innings pitched with eight walks and 30 strikeouts.

The Twins selected Quesada in the 24th round of the 2010 First Year Player Draft out of Sierra Junior College. He played in 18 games for Elizabethton in 2012, batting .234 with five doubles and 10 RBI.

The Twins acquired Pineda in a trade with the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Danny Valencia on Aug. 5 and he split time between the GCL Red Sox and GCL Twins last season. He has a minor league career .304 average in 86 games and is a native of Hormigo in the Dominican Republic.

In 21 games for the Kernels, Jimenez went 7-for-74 for a .095 batting average with two doubles and six RBIs.

All three incoming players will be active and available for Tuesday night's game with the Burlington Bees at 6:35 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. It is the start of an eight-game, seven-day homestand.
