Tia terrific, but Warriors lose

DES MOINES -- Tia Dawson played a magnificent game for Cedar Rapids Washington in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A state basketball tournament Wednesday morning.

Unfortunately for Dawson and the Warriors, it will be the last high school game she'll ever play.

Iowa City West blitzed Washington in the fourth quarter with a 28-point barrage and topped the sixth-ranked Warriors, 67-58, at the Wells Fargo Arena.

Dawson, a 6-foot-2 senior who is bound for Dartmouth, poured in 27 points, grabbed 14 rebounds (setting another school record), and blocked three shots. But it wasn't enough.

Washington (19-4) committed 19 turnovers, shot 3-for-17 on 3-pointers and gave No.3 Iowa City West (22-2) too many open looks at critical times.

The Warriors led after three quarters, 45-39, but Coach Frank Howell elected to rest all five of his starters -- including Dawson -- at the start of the fourth period. It came back to haunt him.

Iowa City West opened the final stanza with an 11-2 blitz to grab a 50-47 lead before Howell could get a timeout and put his starters back in the game. Washington never led again.

Howell acknowledged he might be kicking himself for having all five starters on the bench -- and then see them waiting helplessly at the scorer's table -- as the game turned in Iowa City West's advantage.

"A little bit," he said. "Maybe a lot later."

Ashley Piper pulled Washington within 59-58 with two free throws with 40.4 seconds left, but the Warriors did not score again. The Women of Troy hit eight straight free throws in the final 39 seconds, including six straight by Ally Disterhoft (19 points).

Piper scored 12 points for Washington, but nobody else scored more than five points for the Warriors.

Dawson scored with her left hand, she scored with her right hand, she tossed in a 3-pointer, nailed 12 of 18 shots, grabbed eight offensive rebounds and played one of the best games of her record-setting prep career.

The outcome left her bleary-eyed.

"I'm just really sad," she said. "I really wanted to get out there and get to the championship game and win it all."

The Warriors scored 25 points in the third quarter, opened a pair of seven-point leads and had a 45-39 edge entering the final stanza. Howell has a deep bench and rotated players all year, but this time he elected to rest all five of his starters at the same time and paid a steep price.

Disterhoft hit a 3-pointer to start the fourth period, pulling Iowa City West within 45-42, then Jessica Shull nailed another 3-pointer to tie it, 45-45. Abby Herb gave Washington a 47-45 lead, but Shelly Stumpff tied it and Mckenzie Piper drilled another 3-pointer to give Iowa City West a 50-47 edge.

Howell called a timeout and got his starters in the game, but Disterhoft scored again and Shahana Williams hit a free throw, making it 53-47 and completing a decisive 17-4 run for the Women of Troy.

"I think we might have gotten tired and laid back a little bit too much, and they knocked down 3's on us," said Dawson.

Howell said he was never comfortable during the game, even with a seven-point lead in the third quarter, because Iowa City West is an up-tempo team with numerous weapons.

"They're a great team," he said. "That's why they're down here and that's why they advanced."

Iowa City West will face Linn-Mar in the semifinals on Friday.

The Women of Troy (22-2) shot 9-for-19 on 3-pointers, compared to 3-for-17 for the Warriors. Shull made four 3-pointers and scored 16 points.

The Women of Troy outscored Washington at the foul line, 20-9, although many of those points came in the final minute when the Warriors had to foul. Washington committed 19 turnovers, compared to only 11 for Iowa City West.

Dawson broke the school record for career rebounds, surpassing Kayla Pirtle (Class of 1995). She played a strong all-around game in her final outing for the Warriors.

"She was outstanding. She was great," said Howell. "That's the way you want to see her end her career, going down in a blaze of glory.

"It's hard to think of any better performances (by Dawson). There are quite a few that rank up there. You know, it shows you what she's capable of."

Dawson averages 11 points per game, but looked to score Wednesday from the very start.

"She was determined," said Iowa City West Coach B.J. Mayer. "When she stepped out and hit that 3, I was like, 'We could be in trouble,' because now she's added that part to her game."

In the end, it wasn't enough. Dawson and her teammates left Des Moines in disappointment.

"I just know that I'll remember these people I played with forever," said Dawson.
