Sullivan sparks J-Hawks to first win

PDF

WATERLOO - Two big plays showed what Waterloo East can do with the football.

The statistics and the final score proved what the Trojans cannot do - at least not yet.

While East's passing game gave Cedar Rapids Jefferson some problems, the J-Hawks found a multitude of ways to hurt the Trojans. Jefferson claimed a 37-20 victory Friday night at Memorial Stadium.

For Jefferson, the win was its first of the season and ended an overall 10-game losing streak. For East, the search for head coach Kevin Meyer's first win with the Trojans goes on.

So does the quest for some answers.

"We've got a lot of work to do," said Meyer after East fell to 0-5. "We've got to start Monday morning."

Meyer liked what happened Friday night when quarterback John Magnuson threw to Timoz Buford and Javon Middleton.

Magnuson found Buford with a short pass that the senior wide receiver turned into a spectacular, 80-yard weaving run after the catch. Buford didn't score, but Aryeh Miller did, grabbing a 1-yard pass from Magnuson for East's first touchdown of the opening half.

Middleton, set up by a nice Magnuson pump fake, hauled in a 47-yard TD strike. He also added a 10-yard scoring grab in the final half on the way to 11 receptions for 129 yards.

"We did some good things," said Meyer. "We got the ball out to our playmakers and they made some plays."

But East didn't make enough of them. They trailed, 23-14, at the half, and fell into a 37-14 hole in the third quarter.

The Trojans couldn't keep the ball. A total of 20 rushing plays produced just 40 net yards for a team that didn't have Deshay Wright. East's top running back was injured and did not play.

"We couldn't run the ball at all," said Meyer, "If you can't run the ball, you're one dimensional and you can't call stuff. I'm disappointed we just couldn't run the ball."

Jefferson quarterback Layne Sullivan, on the other hand, ran wild. The senior J-Hawk rushed for 159 yards and threw for 167, giving him 326 yards of total offense.

Sullivan didn't waste much time, connecting with Chaney Floyd on a slant route that became an 86-yard, first-quarter touchdown pass.

In the third quarter, Sullivan bolted down the right sideline and ran 83 yards for a score. He also sneaked for a touchdown.

Said Jefferson Coach Brian Webb, "Layne's a mystery to me. He makes mistakes and I get frustrated at the mistakes we go over on film. Then he turns around and makes a big play.

"For him to become that complete package - he's a great athlete and he makes great plays - he's got to be more consistent with some of his reads and things like that. But he's just a great athlete. He makes great plays and he's a competitor - one of the most committed kids we have."

Nicholas Rocha booted three field goals for Jefferson (1-4, 1-2), including a school-record 46-yarder that opened the scoring. Thus, Jefferson's streak was over, but not Webb's hunger for more.

"I'm happy for our seniors, but this is not our ultimate goal at Jefferson - to win one game," said Webb. "We have the kids and coaches to win more than one."

For Meyer and East, part of the winning formula can be easily seen. The rest is waiting to be discovered.

"Our defense did some good things, but we were soft at times," said the Trojan head coach. "We were minus a few kids, but that's football. No one is going to feel really healthy this time of year.

"The big thing is, we've got to try and stay together. None of the games are easy that we're going to play."
