Kennedy is Top Gun at Columbus

WATERLOO -- The Kennedy girls tennis team won the Waterloo Columbus Top Gun Tournament Saturday, squeezing past the host Sailors.

Kennedy narrowly defeated a strong Waterloo Columbus team that returns four of its top six players from last year's final four state tournament team. The Cougars tallied 32 points and Columbus had 29.

"Columbus will likely be a strong contender for the 1A final four, so this was a great experience for our team," Kennedy Coach Joe Benedict said. "Our strong showing
gives us hope for another strong showing this year."

Ottumwa finished third with 15 and Decorah was 4th with 14.

Singles

1. Jackie Pedersen (CRK) finished first, winning all three of her matches. She defeated Ashley Salgado of Ottumwa 11-1, Anne Nora of Columbus 11-1 and Katrina Shindelar of Decorah 10-2.

2. Sarah Lasecki (CRK) finished second. She defeated Kylie Kruse of Decorah 9-3, Ally Schultz of Ottumwa 8-4 and lost to Lindsay McGonogle of Columbus 7-5.

3. Katherine Thompson (CRK) finished second (based on games won). She lost to Lindsay McManus of Columbus 8-48, lost to Maddie Grimm of Decorah 7-5 and defeated Jessi Black of Ottumwa 9-3.

4. Kali Hildebrand (CRK) finished first, winning all three of her matches. She defeated Rachel Hinebaugh of Ottumwa 11-1, Maggie Locke of Decorah 12-0 and Micah Ratchford of Columbus 8-4.

5. Ashley Schlueter (CRK) finished second. She defeated Brianna Carden of Decorah 11-1, Jennifer Klodt of Ottumwa 11-1 and lost 8-4 to Rachel Schaefer of Columbus.

6. Lindsay Minder (CRK) finished first. She defeated Kim Bearbower of Columbus 7-5, Nicole Parier of Decorah 12-0 and McKenzie McCoy of Ottumwa 12-0.

Doubles

1. Pedersen/Lasecki (CRK) defeated Nora/McManus (WC) 8-4, Salgado/Schulz (O) 8-4 and Shindelaar/Kruse (D) 11-1.

2.  Hildebrand/Schlueter (CRK) defeated Grimm/Locke (D) 12-0, Black and Hinebaugh (O) 12-0 and tied McGonogle/Schaefer 6-6. They finished second by virtue
of total games won.

3. Minder/Thompson (CRK) finished second. They defeated Cardon and Parier (D) 12-0, Klodt/McCoy (O) 11-1 and lost to Bearbrower/Ratchford 5-7.
