Big innings give Eagles pair of wins

VERO BEACH, Fla. - Kirkwood used a pair of big innings in each game and posted two wins to open the baseball season Friday in Florida.

The Eagles used a six-run fourth frame to power past the Ontario Blue Jays, 13-5, in their opener then had an eight-run fifth inning in a 12-5 win over UConn-Avery Point.

Angel Merced had two hits and drove in four runs in the opener. Zach Patterson and Sulliam Rios Reyes had two hits and two RBIs each.

Freshman Tyler Butz, a Prairie product, drove in two runs with a single and sacrifice fly.

Starting pitcher Brian Daphney allowed two hits and two runs in five innings of work.

Randy Perez went 4-for-4 with a double and triple, and drove in four runs, for the Eagles in the nightcap.

Ozzie Adams had two hits and two RBIs.

Cale Henke scattered 10 hits and three runs over five innings. He struck out five.

Kirkwood plays Miami-Hamilton and UConn-Avery Point on Saturday in Vero Beach.
