Emily Feltes wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Emily Feltes is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Feltes is one of the top soccer players in the state and she led Kennedy in scoring as a freshman, sophomore and junior. She has scored 53 goals in 58 games during her career and was named Class 3A all-state last season.

Feltes is a 4.0 student and a member of the National Honor Society. She plans to play soccer at Lewis University next year.

Here is our Question-&-Answer session with Emily Feltes:

MSR: What is your favorite individual highlight in sports?

EMILY: I would say that the thing I’m most proud of in my soccer career is being a consistent team leader in both scoring goals and assisting others in their goal-scoring efforts. I have always tried very hard to be a selfless team player, so being able to help my teams create a lot of goal-scoring opportunities is very special. Fortunately, I’ve been blessed to have a lot  of talented and competitive teammates to play with and help create the opportunities to be successful.

MSR: What is your favorite team highlight in sports?

EMILY: I have really enjoyed playing for the USYSA Iowa State Championship and being selected to two RUSH National Teams, but my favorite team success was when my Kennedy High School team won the Class 3A State Championship in 2012. I am from a soccer family with my sister Elise and brother Ben both winning USYSA State Championships as well, but neither got to experience winning the High School championship so it gives me something to come back with when we’re one upping each other.

MSR: What are your future goals in sports?

EMILY: I have accepted a scholarship to continue my education and play soccer at Lewis University in Illinois beginning this fall. I am excited to experience college soccer while trying to continue growing and contributing to my team’s success.

MSR: Who has had the biggest influence on your sports career?

EMILY: My sister Elise and brother Ben have been great role models for me. I grew up with two very dedicated student-athletes and they’ve been very supportive and encouraging. My parents have also played a very supportive role in giving me the opportunity to travel and play with so manycompetitive teams.

MSR: What are your favorite classes in school?

EMILY: Math is my favorite subject in school.

MSR: What has been your favorite community service project?

EMILY: Each summer I've joined St. Paul's UMC for the annual mission service trip. We've traveled to help communities in need throughout the midwest. It has been very rewarding to see how our visits and service projects can make such a positive impact on people's lives.
