Daniels wins Metro Spotlight Award

Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Zach Daniels is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Daniels has made a name for himself at Kennedy as an elite all-state baseball player, but he's also a successful basketball player for the Cougars and riding an impressive hot streak.

Daniels scored 22 points and had eight steals in a 77-64 loss at Johnston Tuesday night, then he came back three nights later and scored 22 points with six 3-pointers in a clutch 74-61 victory at Cedar Falls Friday.

Daniels is averaging 12 points for Kennedy, with approximately three assists and three steals per game. He scored a season-high 24 points with five assists in a victory over Ames Jan. 10.

Daniels helped the Kennedy baseball team reach the Class 4A state tournament last summer and finish with a 31-7 record. He compiled an 8-1 record and 1.01 ERA as a pitcher, and he hit .467 with 32 RBIs and 22 stolen bases as their second baseman.

Daniels has signed to play baseball at the University of Iowa.
