Kernels 'split' 2 games with Peoria

PEORIA, Ill. - It took the Cedar Rapids Kernels five days to win a ballgame against the Peoria Chiefs, but it took only 84 minutes to lose another one Monday night.

The Kernels clipped the Chiefs, 7-3, Monday in the completion of a game that was suspended May 14 in Cedar Rapids due to wet grounds in the fourth inning.

They finished that suspended game in Peoria because the teams do not meet in Cedar Rapids again during the first half of the Midwest League season. Once that was done, the Chiefs blanked the Kernels 1-0 on a one-hitter in seven innings.

The "split" left Cedar Rapids with a 23-15 record.

Tanner English and Trey Vavra had two hits in the suspended game. English and Nick Gordon scored two runs. Vavra belted a three-run homer.

Keaton Steele, who joined the Kernels Monday from Extended Spring Training, pitched five strong innings in "relief" in the suspended game. He was on the mound when the game resumed and allowed only three hits and one run in five innings.

Zack Larson got the Kernels' only hit in the regularly scheduled game. The Kernels did not draw any walks and one man reached on an error.

Peoria scored a run in the third inning for the 1-0 verdict. Mat Batts pitched all six innings for Cedar Rapids, allowing the run on five hits. He struck out 12 batters and walked one.

Austin Gomber tossed the one-hitter for Peoria at Dozer Park.

Cedar Rapids and Peoria meet again Tuesday at 11 a.m.
