Kernels sweep series at Wisconsin

GRAND CHUTE, Wis. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels finished a three-game sweep of the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Wednesday night with a 3-2 victory before 3,072 fans at Fox Cities Stadium.

The Kernels swept the Timber Rattlers for the third time this season and raised their record against them to 11-1. Felix Jorge tossed six shutout innings for Cedar Rapids but got a no-decision.

Rafael Valera's RBI single in the ninth inning broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Kernels the lead. Valera's two-out single to left scored pinch-runner Tanner English from second base.

English pinch-ran for Alex Real, who singled to begin the ninth inning. English advanced into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Brett Doe.

Real finished the night with three hits, going 3-for-4 with an RBI.

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Khris Davis began a rehab assignment with the Timber Rattlers and went 0-for-3 with an intentional walk in the eighth inning.

Cedar Rapids led the majority of the game, but Wisconsin tallied two runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie at 2-2.

Michael Theofanopoulos (2-2) earned the win after allowing two runs on two hits in two innings, striking out four and walking two. Trevor Hildenberger worked a perfect ninth inning for his ninth save.

Jorge was terrific again on the mound for the Kernels. He allowed four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Jorge has now lasted at least six innings in 12 of 13 starts and has a 2.20 ERA.

The Kernels (4-3, 45-32) jumped ahead 1-0 in the second inning on Max Murphy's RBI triple to deep center. Murphy's team-best seventh triple of the season hit off the base of the wall in center and scored Real, who singled to begin the inning.

Real drove in the team's second run in the sixth inning with an RBI single to right-center. His second hit of the night came with two outs and scored Edgar Corcino. Corcino led off the inning by reaching on an error by third baseman Dustin DeMuth.

The Kernels play at Burlington's Community Field against the Bees at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. Ethan Mildren (1-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for the Kernels.
