Jorge, Corcino help Kernels slam Beloit

BELOIT, Wis. – Felix Jorge tossed eight scoreless innings and Edgar Corcino hit a grand slam as the Cedar Rapids Kernels blasted the Beloit Snappers, 8-1, before 424 fans Wednesday night at Pohlman Field.

The victory came a day after Beloit topped the Kernels by the same score in Cedar Rapids.

Jorge (4-3, 2.00 ERA) scattered six hits, striking out seven and walking one. He has pitched at least six innings in 13 of his 14 starts this season and this was the second time he lasted eight full innings.

Corcino’s grand slam came in a five-run fifth that put the game out of reach. It was the team’s first grand slam in 2015 and Corcino’s second long ball of the season.

Corcino went 3-for-5, raising his batting average to .290. Rafael Valera had two hits and two RBIs. Nick Gordon and Zack Larson also had two hits.

The Kernels (50-34) scored three runs with two outs in the second inning. Brian Navarreto’s two-out infield single scored Jorge Fernandez from third base.

Valera followed with a two-run double to plate T.J. White and Navarreto. A throwing error by third baseman Jose Brizuela early in the inning opened the scoring opportunity for the Kernels.

Cedar Rapids sent nine batters to the plate in the fifth inning and took an 8-0 lead. Three straight singles by Valera, Larson and Gordon loaded the bases with no outs.

Corcino pulled his grand slam over the left field wall. Max Murphy was hit by a pitch and scored on a two-out single by White.

Beloit (32-52) picked up its lone run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning off reliever Brandon Bixler.

The two-game series at Beloit concludes at 7 p.m. Thursday with Ethan Mildren (2-0, 0.48) on the mound for Cedar Rapids.
