Johnson wins first Presidents Cup match

Cedar Rapids' Zach Johnson helped the United States post a 4-1 lead over the International team on the first day of the Presidents Cup golf competition Thursday in Incheon City, South Korea.

Johnson, a Regis High school graduate, teamed with Phil Mickelson for a 2-up win over Jason Day and Steve Bowditch in foursomes play (alternate shot). Johnson and Mickelson never trailed in the match.

Johnson again will play with Mickelson in four-ball play at 10:05 p.m. Iowa time Thursday night against the team of Jason Day and Adam Scott. Incheon City is 14 hours ahead of the Central time zone.

Johnson won two tournaments this season, including The British Open, and is ranked No. 10 in the world. He has two major championships and 12 victories in all.

This is the fourth time Johnson has played in the Presidents Cup, with the U.S. winning the previous three times. He also has been a member of four Ryder Cup teams and a World Cup squad.
