Andersen wins Metro Spotlight Award

McKenna Andersen of Xavier is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Andersen, a 5-foot-9 senior, has been on a hot streak for the Xavier girls basketball team and is averaging 17.5 points with twelve 3-pointers in her last four ballgames.

The hot streak began when Andersen scored 20 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to help the Saints defeat Davenport Assumption on Dec. 22 to give Coach Tom Lilly the 500th victory of his career.

Andersen poured in 26 points and hit six 3-pointers in a Mississippi Valley Conference victory over Waterloo West Friday night. She also scored 14 points against West Des Moines Valley and had 10 points and seven rebounds against Prairie this past week.

Andersen is averaging 11.5 points this season for Xavier, which has a 6-6 record despite a demanding schedule.

Andersen burst onto the scene as a freshman when she averaged 5.5 points and was a key reserve for the Saints when they captured the Class 4A state title in 2013. She missed all of her sophomore year with a knee injury, but bounced back last year and averaged 8.0 points per game.
