Smith-Drahos wins Metro Spotlight Award

Max Smith-Drahos of Cedar Rapids Prairie is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Smith-Drahos, a 6-foot-1 junior, exploded for a career-high 34 points Friday night when the Hawks defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 77-72, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game to snap a five-game losing streak.

Smith-Drahos made 11 of 17 field goals, including both of his 3-pointers, and was 10 for 12 at the foul line. He also had eight rebounds, two steals and one assist in the contest.

Smith-Drahos scored 18 points in a loss to Kennedy Tuesday night, giving him 52 points and a 26-point average for the week. The performances raised his scoring average to 13.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.

Smith-Drahos missed one game this month and was slowed in several others due to illness, but he was in fine form against Kennedy and Washington. He's also scored 20 points against Muscatine this season and had 18 points, 6 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 assists against Davenport North.

Smith-Drahos averaged 9.4 points for the Prairie varsity last season as a sophomore and led the team in scoring.
