State meet, here they come.

Cameron Kelley and Nick Saulnier had big days for the Cedar Rapids Washington swimming team Saturday as the Warriors won their 53rd straight district title at the Linn-Mar Aquatic Center.

Kelley and Saulnier both captured two individual events and swam on two victorious relay teams. Best of all, Kelley and Saulnier earned No. 1 seeds for the state meet in Marshalltown next Saturday in all four of their specialties.

Kelley, a junior, has the No. 1 seed in the 500 freestyle and 200 freestyle after claiming district titles in both events. Saulnier, a senior, has the No. 1 seed in the 200 individual medley and 100 backstroke after splashing to district crowns.

Washington also notched the 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. In addition, sophomore George Durin won the district title in the 100 freestyle to give the Warriors eight victories in 11 events.

All told, Metro swimmers won all 11 of the district titles.

Paul Hummell of Jefferson captured the 50 freestyle and 100 breaststroke.

Matt Peng of Linn-Mar took first place in the 100 butterfly.

Washington won the district title with 421 points, good for a 73-point victory over the Linn-Mar Lions. Kennedy finished third in the eight-team meet and Jefferson placed sixth.

The Warriors began winning district swimming titles in 1964 and have never stopped, extending their mastery over the terms of nine different U.S. presidents.

In addition to their four No. 1 seeds from Kelley and Saulnier, the Warriors have six other top-10 seeds for the state meet. Kaleb Donels is seeded third in the 100 backstroke and eighth in the 200 IM. The Warriors are ranked No. 3 in the 200 medley relay, No. 5 in the 200 free relay and No. 6 in the 400 free relay. Durin is seeded ninth in the 100 freestyle.

Linn-Mar is seeded No. 6 in the 200 free relay and Hogan Myers is eighth in the 500 free.

Stefan Kitsos of Kennedy is seeded No. 4 in the 100 breaststroke and No. 9 in the 50 free. The Cougars are ranked No. 7 in the 200 medley relay.

Hummell is seeded No. 2 in the 100 breaststroke and No. 8 in the 50 free.
The J-Hawks are also seeded No. 8 in the 200 medley relay.
