Klostermann stars as Lions bop Hawks

PDF

The Linn-Mar Lions put on the "Beau & Bo" show Friday night, and it was bye-bye Prairie.

Beau Klostermann pumped in a career-high 26 points and Jordan Bohannon notched 23 after a slow start as the Lions knocked off the Prairie Hawks, 81-63, in an entertaining Mississippi Valley Conference game at the Prairie gym.

Bohannon did not score in the first 15 minutes of the game and had two personal fouls at that point, but he got hot after that and finished with five 3-pointers and slick drives to the hoop.

The Lions are accustomed to getting big nights from Bohannon, who leads Class 4A in scoring, but Klostermann more than doubled his pre-game norm of 11.7 points per outing. Klosterman pumped in four 3-pointers in the first half and had 18 points at intermission, helping the Lions take a 47-38 lead.

Klostermann, a 6-foot-4 senior, added eight more points in the second half. He's technically the starting center for the smallish Lions, but he's a versatile player who can score from all spots.

"That was a big game for him," Linn-Mar coach Chris Robertson said. "He was really in the groove and really shot it well. He's a tough match-up."

All five of Linn-Mar's starters can shoot the ball and they demonstrated it again Friday. Jared Printy popped in three 3-pointers and scored 13 points, Riley Murphy hit two 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Jordan Brandt also hit a triple.

The Lions poured in eleven 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 15 for the game, just one shy of the school record. They finished 15 of 29 from long range.

"It's kind of nice that everybody can shoot and get the rebound every now and then," said Klostermann, who is exploring the possibility of joining the University of Northern Iowa as a walk-on.

The Prairie Hawks did their best to keep pace with the Lions and pulled within 67-61 on a 3-pointer by Cal Clark with 6:10 left in the ballgame, but the "Beau & Bo" show got clicking again.

Klostermann drove for two points, then Bohannon made three straight nifty drives to the bucket for six quick points as the Lions regained control at 75-61. Klostermann popped into another bucket for good measure to make it 77-61, finishing a 10-0 spurt and sealing the game.

"I think we played pretty good," Klostermann said. "Offensively we shot the ball pretty well, but defensively in the first half we didn't do so hot."

The Lions surrendered 38 points in the first half, but held Prairie to 25 markers in the second half.

"We cleaned up the defense in the second half," Robertson said. "In the first half we were scoring but we were trading."

Robertson liked the way his club played on offense.

"We moved the ball. That's two games in a row where I think we've moved it really well and shared it and got some good looks at it," he remarked.

"We're starting to figure out if we attack the paint first and kick out, those 3's are wide open. Guys are stepping into them and obviously we shot it well."

Linn-Mar raised its records to 13-5 overall and 11-3 in the conference. Prairie fell to 7-12 overall and 5-9 in the league.

Clark made four 3-pointers and led a balanced attack for the Hawks with 14 points. Max Smith-Drahos scored 12 points and Jalen Rima had 10.
