Williamsburg takes twinbill from Norway

The Williamsburg Red Sox swept an Iowa Valley League doubleheader from the Norway Bandits Sunday in Norway to square their record at 4-4.

Elsewhere, the Walford Hogs upended Red Top in the second game of their doubleheader in Walford on a one-hitter by Diogenes Ceballos to hand Red Top its first loss of the campaign after seven straight wins.

WILLIAMSBURG 3-12, NORWAY 2-2

In what league officials called an "historic event," the Williamsburg Red Sox swept Norway on the road just three weeks after sweeping Watkins on the road for four victories against traditional IVL powers.

Williamsburg and Norway were tied, 2-2, heading into the top of the ninth inning in the opener. Garrett Saunders and Nolan Arp collected back-to-back doubles for Williamsburg in the ninth and Travis Bowman retired the side in the bottom of the ninth for the 3-2 victory.

Ryan Arp pitched the first five innings for Williamsburg in the opener and Bowman tossed the last four innings.

Oswaldo Calderon scored both runs for Norway and Ron Benich had two hits for the Bandits.

Williamsburg scored nine runs in the fifth inning of the nightcap on four hits, three walks and three hit-batters, along with wild pitches, errors and a balk. Nolan Arp had a big three-run single for the Red Sox in the 12-2 triumph.

RED TOP 10-1, WALFORD 3-4

WALFORD - Ceballos was added to the Walford roster last week and paid immediate dividends by pitching a one-hitter for the Hogs in a 4-1 victory in the second game of their doubleheader.

Ceballos and Bryce Grimm had two hits for Walford in the second game. Nick Day collected the only hit against Ceballos with an RBI double for Red Top in the seventh inning.

Red Top cruised in the opener, 10-3, in a game that was tied 3-3 after one inning. Aaron Saeugling collected two doubles for Red Top and pitched two scoreless innings in relief after Cole Baker went the first four innings.

Trey Beckman had three hits for Red Top in the first game. Tyler Howe and Casey Pauli had two hits for the winners and Howe had two RBIs.

Logan Holtz collected four hits for Walford in the first game.
