Promes tosses 2-hitter for Ironside Apparel

Marissa Promes gladly makes the 2 1/2-hour drive from Jefferson in western Iowa each Sunday so she can play in the Iowa Women's Softball League in Cedar Rapids.

It turned out to be an especially happy drive back to Jefferson Sunday evening.

Promes tossed a two-hitter as Ironside Apparel topped Emil's Hideaway, 5-2, in the first game of their doubleheader at Coe College Sunday in  a game televised live by KCRG 9.2.

Promes, who helped Indian Hills Community College reach the NJCAA Division I World Series this year, struck out seven batters and allowed only one earned run.

Emil's Hideaway rebounded with a 4-2 victory in Game 2 as Taylor Kurtz from the University of Dubuque pitched a complete game.

Ironside Apparel scored four runs in the sixth inning of the opener to break a 1-1 tie. Erin Kuba of Indian Hills and Hannah Onken of Wartburg had RBI singles in the game for Ironside Apparel, while Morgan Smith of Southeastern and Promes had RBI grounders.

Kurtz allowed 10 hits in the second game for Emil's Hideaway, but she worked out of trouble and left 10 runners on base in the 4-2 verdict.

Megan Bonnett of Luther had two hits and an RBI double for Emil's. Morgan Goedken of Wartburg also had an RBI double for Emil's and Skylar Hop of Mount Mercy contributed an RBI single for the winners.

Brittney Roby of UNI, Daniella Ibarra of Iowa and Onken had two hits for Ironside in the second game. Haley Jones of Coe had an RBI triple and made a sensational diving catch of a line drive in left-center field.

Construction Materials received good work from three pitchers in their 2-1 victory over Hawkeye Convenience Stores in the first game at Kirkwood. KyLeigh Becker of Loras had a strong outing for Hawkeye Convenience Stores in a tough setback.

Ali Herdliska of South Dakota State belted a home run to help Hawkeye Convenience Stores win the second game, 8-6. Tianna Drahn of UNI had  three hits for Hawkeye Convenience Stores and Morgan Frost of Kirkwood also had a multi-hit game for the victors.

Alyssa Wiebel of Illinois State socked a home run for Construction Materials and Hailey Duwa of Western Illinois had a multi-hit game.
