Fairfax keeps 3-game lead in IVL

IOWA CITY - Fairfax is making a strong bid to snap Red Top's  stranglehold on the Iowa Valley League title.

Fairfax split a doubleheader with Red Top on Sunday in games played at Iowa City West High School to maintain its three-game lead in the IVL standings with six games left in the regular season.

Red Top won the first game, 8-7, in eight innings, but Fairfax  responded with an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.

Fairfax sits atop the league with a 12-2 record. Red Top, which has  won six straight league titles, is sitting in second place at 9-5.

Trey Beckman drove in Cal Clark with the winning run for Red Top in the eighth inning of the opener. Beckman hit a two-run homer in the game and was named the IVL Player of the Week.

Reid Bonner went 4-or-4 for Red Top in the first game with a double, triple and three RBIs. Ben Norman had two hits for the winners.

Jimmy Lizarraga had three hits, three RBIs and a two-run homer for Fairfax in the first game.

Blake Hargens pitched five shutout innings for Fairfax in the 8-0 victory in the nightcap. Ben Milks tossed the last two innings to  finish the six-hit shutout.

Fairfax scored five runs in the first inning and added three runs in  the second to take command early. Walker Breard hit a two-run homer  and Adam Stolley had two hits.

Ben Weeks had two hits for Red Top.

WALFORD SWEEPS WILLIAMSBURG

WALFORD - Parker Bolt tossed a two-hit shutout as Walford blanked  Williamsburg, 3-0, in the first game of their doubleheader Sunday.

Bolt struck out five batters in the first two innings and took a  no-hitter into the sixth inning. He was named the IVL co-Pitcher of  the Week for his performance.

Matt Hoeg belted a two-run homer for Walford in the 3-0 victory. Bryce Grimm collected two hits and an RBI.

Walford took the second game, 4-1, behind a two-hitter by Adam Ketelsen. Mitch Moser had two hits and two RBIs for Walford and Hoeg collected another RBI.
