6 more players join IWSL for 2018

There's too much snow on the ground to play college softball in most parts of Iowa right now, but registration for the summer league has accelerated like a snowball going down a hill.

Six more players have joined the Iowa Women's Softball League for this year, boosting the total number of players to 48 for the only collegiate summer league in Iowa.

Natalie Halvorson of Kirkwood, Payton Bruner of Mount Mercy, Lizzy Adams of Coe, Tara Lance of DMACC, Marissa Promes of Buena Vista and Addison Westercamp of Southwestern Community College have all enrolled in the IWSL in the past few days.

Halvorson, a freshman from Cedar Rapids Prairie, has compiled a 10-2 record and 2.52 ERA for the second-ranked Kirkwood Eagles. She is tied for seventh in the country in victories and has shown pinpoint control, with 58 strikeouts and only 11 walks in 75 innings.

Bruner, a sophomore infielder from Cedar Rapids Washington, is hitting .400 for Mount Mercy with three homers and 17 RBIs. The Mustangs are 18-13 overall and 7-5 in the Heart of America Conference after struggling last season.

Adams, a freshman pitcher from Norwalk, has not appeared in any varsity games for Coe so far. The Kohawks own an 8-8 record.

Lance, a freshman infielder and outfielder from Solon, has been used mostly as a pinch-runner for DMACC this season and has scored six times. The DMACC Bears are 16-0 and ranked No. 2 in the NJCAA Division II poll.

Promes, a pitcher at Buena Vista, has a 4-0 record and 3.18 ERA for the Beavers, who have gotten off to an 11-3 start. Promes is from Greene County High School.

Westercamp, a third baseman from Moulton-Udell High School, was hoping to play at Southwestern Community College this season, but SWCC canceled its season due to a lack of players. She is the third player from Southwestern to join the IWSL to stay active.

Players from 26 different colleges have enrolled for Year 2 of the program. The list includes seven players from NCAA Division III schools, six from NCAA Division I schools, five from junior colleges, four from NCAA Division II schools and four from NAIA schools.

The Iowa Women's Softball League will play a series of eight Sunday doubleheaders this June and July for a 16-game season. There is an Eastern Division in Cedar Rapids and a new Central Division in Ames and Indianola.

The Hawkeye Convenience Stores are the title sponsor for the league. Ironside Apparel and Emil's Hideaway/Freshwraps Deli are gold medal sponsors. Bosch Financial is a silver medal sponsor, while Butz Insurance, TSF Structures and Acoustics by Washburn are bronze medal sponsors.
