No. 3 Eagles pound Iowa Central, 35-0

The third-ranked Kirkwood softball team destroyed Iowa Central in an ICCAC conference doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Kirkwood.

The Eagles whipped Iowa Central, 25-0, in the first game and captured the second game, 10-0.

Both mismatches were stopped after 4 1/2 innings by the college mercy rule. Kirkwood scored 35 runs in just eight innings.

Rachel Stewart went 5-for-5 in the first game with two doubles, two homers, four RBIs and five runs. The freshman shortstop has belted 13 homers this year.

Monika Bevans was 3-for-3 and drove in two runs. Kenady Waugh, Audra Bridenstine and Skylar Ryan had two hits. Waugh and Ryan collected a pair of doubles.

Bevans, Bridenstine, Ryan and Miranda Kaste drove in two runs. Lauren Kuch scored four times and Waugh scored three runs.

DoniRae Mayhew socked her 17th home run in the first game and drove in three runs. She also pitched a three-hit shutout with two strikeouts and no walks.

Mayhew is tied for first in the country with her 17 homers and is tied for fourth in the nation with 16 victories.

Natalie Halvorson (15-4) tossed a three-hitter with six strikeouts in the 10-0 verdict in Game 2.

Bevans went 2-for-3 with her 11th home run and four RBIs in the nightcap. Mayhew was 2-for-3 and Waugh scored three runs.

Kirkwood raised its records to 33-5 overall and 10-2 in the conference. Iowa Central fell to 24-21 overall and 4-6 in the league.
