Guy will join Iowa softball program

Like father, like daughter.

Avery Guy confirmed Friday that she has accepted an offer to continue her college softball career at the University of Iowa, beginning with the 2020 season after she plays another year at DMACC.

Willie Guy, her father, played football at Iowa from 1992 through 1995 under Hall of Fame coach Hayden Fry.

Avery Guy said she likes the idea of extending her family's tradition with the Hawkeyes and following her father to Iowa City.

"I'm really excited," she said. "He's been one of my biggest supporters. It's really been a goal of mine."

Guy was an all-state shortstop at Cedar Rapids Jefferson. She hit .362 with two homers and 33 RBIs as a freshman this past season at DMACC, which finished third at the NJCAA Division II World Series with a 48-2 record.

New Iowa Coach Renee Gillispie offered Guy the opportunity to enroll at the university this January and play for the Hawkeyes during the 2019 season, but Guy elected to honor her commitment to DMACC for another campaign.

"I couldn't imagine leaving them at all," she said.

Guy is capable of playing all three infield positions at shortstop, second base and third base, but Gillispie has mentioned the possibility of moving to the outfield.

"She said she likes my athleticism," Guy remarked. "I'm pretty quick and could do well out there."

Guy took an official visit to Iowa during the first weekend in September. She committed to the Hawkeyes this past Monday night.

"I really liked my visit. I liked everything about it," she said. "It was really neat to talk to all the coaches. They all have the same goal."

Guy played in the Iowa Women's Softball League this past summer in Cedar Rapids. DoniRae Mayhew, an infielder from Kirkwood, and Sarah Lehman, a pitcher from Iowa City Regina, also played in the IWSL this year and are currently members of the Iowa softball program.

Mia Ruther, one of Guy's teammates at DMACC, also has committed to the Hawkeyes. Ruther is a middle infielder from Burlington.
