The Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints would love to make the Class 4A state baseball tournament this year, but they both cannot make it due to the substate pairings announced Monday.
Kennedy and Xavier have been placed in the same substate tournament, so only one of them can make it to Des Moines.
The same holds true for Linn-Mar, Prairie and Jefferson. All three of those teams have been assigned to the same substate, so only one of them can advance.
Washington does not have any Metro teams in its substate, but the Warriors drew a tough bargain with Iowa City West and Iowa City High, among others.
Kennedy and Xavier were assigned to Substate No. 2 with Cedar Falls, Mason City, Waterloo East and Waterloo West.
Washington was assigned to Substate No. 3 with Clinton, Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior, Iowa City High and Iowa City West.
Jefferson, Linn-Mar and Prairie were assigned to Substate No. 5 with Burlington, Muscatine and Ottumwa.
There are eight Class 4A substates with six teams apiece. The winner of each substate will advance to the state tournament. Substate pairings will be announced July 2 and teams will be seeded 1 through 6 in each substate.
The Class 4A substate tournaments will be held July 13, 16 and 18.
The Marion Indians were assigned to Substate No. 3 in Class 3A with Benton Community, Center Point-Urbana, Clear Creek Amana, Solon, South Tama, Union and Vinton-Shellsburg. There are eight substates in Class 3A, with the winners advancing to state.
Cedar Valley Chistian has been assigned to Substate No. 7 in Class 1A with Alburnett, Calamus-Wheatland, Bellevue Marquette, Midland, North Linn, Preston, Prince of Peace and Springville. There are eight substates in Class 1A, with the winners advancing to the state tournament.
