Late rally foils Prairie Hawks

Bettendorf scored twice in the top of the seventh inning and beat Prairie, 2-1, Monday night in a non-conference baseball game at Prairie.

Bettendorf (18-17) scored both of its runs with two outs. With two out and two on the Bulldogs plated a run on a fielder’s choice that was not in time to retire a man, and then again on an error.

Just like that the victory slipped through the Hawks' fingers.

Prairie (22-17) got good pitching throughout the game. Bryce Alberts started and pitched four innings of shutout, one-hit ball.

Prairie scored its lone run in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Ty Votroubek.

Alberts gave way to Mitch Adams in the top of the fifth. Adams took the loss, giving up two runs and one hit in three innings of work.

“We got the pitching we were hoping to see tonight,” said Prairie Coach Matt Thede.  "We just didn’t hit the ball like we wanted to.”

“Coach told us that they were a fastball hitting team, so I really mixed it up on the mound tonight,” said Alberts.  “Their only hit was an off-balanced dink.”

“Baseball is a funny game,” said Adams.  “It just didn’t work out tonight. I really wanted to get it done for the seniors, they have meant a lot to this program.”

Caleb Davison got the lone Prairie hit. Bettendorf's Matt Ulrich and Justin Hill combined for the one-hitter while striking out 11.

Prairie opens up substate tournament play Friday at home at 7 p.m. against Ottumwa.
