Indians win 5 events at Wartburg track

WAVERLY - The Marion Indians won five events at an indoor track meet hosted by Wartburg College Tuesday.

Blair Brooks was a double-winner for Marion, taking the high jump (5-10) and the long jump (20-1 1/2).

Myles Bach captured the 1600 (4:43.08) and Jeremy Fopma took the 3200 (10:13.05).

Madison Bach won the 1500 for the Marion girls (4:58.40).

Mahlia Brown finished second in the shot put (35-11). Skylar Miller-Baker took third in the 200 (28.27) and the Marion girls placed third in the 4x800 relay (10:18.01).

The Marion boys finished third in the 4x400 relay (3:39.69).

Linn-Mar girls roar at state track

DES MOINES - Payton Wensel considers herself an awkward freshman in some respects, but she ran like a gazelle Thursday under blue skies in Des Moines.

Wensel captured the 400 meter dash and helped Linn-Mar win the 4x800 relay as the Lions roared into first place after the first day of the Class 4A state meet.

Linn-Mar junior Stephanie Jenks breezed to victory in the 3,000 meter run for the sixth state title of her record-setting career as the Lions got off to a fast start in the three-day meet.

Linn-Mar leads the pack with 30 points. Pleasant Valley is second with 24 points.

Wensel keeps surprising herself with her performances as a ninth grader.

Marion - Girls Track

Marion wins 4 events at district meet

The Marion Indians won four events at the Class 3A district track meet atĀ Thomas Park Thursday.

Blair Brooks captured the high jump and Skylar Cook claimed the long jump for the Marion boys. The Indians also won the shuttle hurdle relay with Devin Quinn, Cook, Brooks and Deshaun Quinn.

Maddie Bach won the 3000 meter run for the Marion girls.

The Xavier boys won two events Thursday with Evan Gradoville in the 400 meter dash and Bryce Charipar in the 110 hurdles.

District champions automatically qualify for the state meet in Des Moines next week.

Cook wins long jump at Wamac meet

MAQUOKETA - Skylar Cook of Marion won the long jump at the Wamac Conference meet Thursday with a leap of 21 feet, 3 1/2 inches at Maquoketa.

The Marion boys finished fourth in the team standings with 68 points. Center Point-Urbana won the title with 107 points.

Colton Forster placed second in the 3200 meter run (10:03.02) and finished third in the 1600 (4:39.82). Marion also received third-place showings from Blair Brooks in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), Jeremy Fopma in the 3200 (10:07.23) and the shuttle hurdle relay (59.46).

The Marion girls finished 11th in their division with 31.5 points. Mahlia Brown placed third in the shot put at 37 feet, 4 3/4 inches.

Solon won the girls title with 123 points.

Madison Bach wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion junior Madison Bach is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Bach, who is competing in two sports this spring, had a big week for the Indians past week as she switched from one sport to another on consecutiveĀ days.

On Thursday, Bach won the 1,500-meter run and the 3,000 meter run at the Marion Invitational at Thomas Park. And on Friday, she scored three goals for the Marion soccer team in a 5-2 victory at Williamsburg in a Wamac Conference match.
