Next Oglesby camp starts Jan. 17

The next session of the Josh Oglesby Basketball Camps will begin on Sunday, Jan. 17 at the Hennessey Recreation Center at Mount Mercy University.

The session will last for four weeks, running each Sunday through Feb. 7. Players in grades 3, 4 and 5 will attend from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. each Sunday, with players in grades 6, 7 and 8 attending from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Sunday.

Help us pick the top stories of 2015

I sat down at the computer Thursday and spent two hours reviewing all the stories we've posted on the Metro Sports Report website in 2015.

I went through the archives day by day, story by story, making a list (and checking it twice) to refresh my memory of everything that's transpired this past year. The goal was to pick a "Top 10" list for 2015, but I quickly ran into a problem.

It's too hard.

The number of big stories was truly amazing and the list got longer and longer as I flipped through each day, each week and each month from Dec. 24 back to Jan. 1. I went backwards, due to the way the stories are archived, so it was like flipping through the pages of a scrapbook from back to front.

Then it hit me: Why not ask our readers to vote for the top stories?

Why don't you tell me, instead of me telling you?

I've put my own informal list together, based on the stories that really touched me or grabbed my interest. The No. 1 story for me was a truly sad one, but it also became an uplifting story as time went by.

Schebler traded to Cincinnati

Former Cedar Rapids Prairie standout Scott Schebler was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday as part of a three-team deal also involving the Chicago White Sox.

Todd Frazier, an All-Star third baseman is Cincinnati, is going to Chicago, as the Reds sent Frazier to Chicago in a three-team deal that brought three prospects — Schebler, an outfielder, infielder Jose Peraza, and outfielder/infielder Brandon Dixon — from the Dodgers to the Reds.

Schebler, 25, spent most of the 2015 campaign at Triple-A Oklahoma City before being a September call-up for the Dodgers.

He batted .242/.324/.515 with three home runs and two steals in 18 September games last season. Given his major league experience and the Reds' rebuilding roster, Schebler figures to have a chance at making the Opening Day roster as a corner outfielder in 2016.
