Saints climb to No. 3 in rankings

The Xavier Saints jumped one spot to No. 3 in the new Class 3A boys basketball rankings Monday afternoon by the Associated Press.

The Saints (9-2) went 2-1 last week, with victories over Dubuque Hempstead and Iowa City High and a loss to Class 4A power Dowling Catholic.

The Linn-Mar Lions (7-3) fell two spots to No. 8 in the Class 4A rankings. The Lions split two games last week, beating Dubuque Senior and falling to Iowa City West.

Pella is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A this week.

CLASS 3A

1. Pella (11-1), 2. Dubuque Wahlert (9-3), 3. Xavier (9-2), 4. Spirit Lake (11-2), 5. Harlan (10-2), 6. Waverly-Shell Rock (10-3), 7. Glenwood (10-3), 8. Sioux City Heelan (9-4), 9. Chariton (11-1), 10. MOC-Floyd Valley (9-3).

CLASS 4A

Saints 4th, Lions 6th in AP rankings

The Xavier Saints stayed in the No. 4 spot in the Class 3A boys basketball rankings by the Associated Press Monday.

The Saints have a 7-1 record heading into Tuesday night's game at Dubuque Hempstead.

The Linn-Mar Lions (6-2) have climbed to No. 6 in the Class 4A poll. The Lions host Dubuque Senior Tuesday night and have a big date at second-ranked Iowa City West Friday night.

West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Pella is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

1. West Des Moines Valley (10-0), 2. Iowa City West (7-2), 3. Pleasant Valley (10-0), 4. Des Moines Hoover (8-1), 5. Ankeny (9-1) 6. Linn-Mar (6-2), 7. Dowling Catholic (7-1), 8. Council Bluffs Lincoln (9-1), 9. Ankeny Centennial (7-2), 10. Ames (7-2).

Kennedy girls climb to No. 2

The Kennedy girls basketball team jumped two spots in the IGHSAU rankings this week and is now the No. 2 club in the Class 5A poll.

The Cougars (11-1) beat then-No. 9 Linn-Mar Tuesday night and are riding an 11-game winning streak. They play at Dubuque Wahlert Friday night.

Johnston has replaced Waukee as the No. 1 team in Class 5A. Waukee, which handed Kennedy its only loss in the season opener, has fallen to No. 6 with a 6-2 record.

Linn-Mar (6-2) dropped two spots to No. 11.

The Marion Indians (6-3) dropped one notch to No. 6 in Class 4A.

Saints, Lions ranked in AP poll

The Xavier Saints and Linn-Mar Lions are ranked in the boys basketball poll by the Associated Press this week.

The Saints are ranked No. 4 in Class 3A and the Lions are ranked No. 10 in Class 4A. The Saints climbed two spots in the rankings this week. The Lions were not ranked a week ago.

Pella leads the Class 3A poll and Iowa City West leads the Class 4A rankings.

4 Metro girls teams make rankings

Four girls basketball teams from the Metro area have cracked the preseason rankings by the IGHSAU.

The Marion Indians are ranked No. 4 in Class 4A, the highest ranking for a Metro club. The Xavier Saints are ranked No. 11 in Class 4A.

Linn-Mar is ranked No. 10 in Class 5A and Kennedy is ranked No. 12.

Mason City is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Waukee is No. 1 in Class 5A.
