Pastor gives strength to Cedar Valley gridders

Their team name of the Huskies notwithstanding, the 16 boys on the Cedar Valley Christian varsity eight-man football squad are less than husky.

“Let’s face it,” said Coach Ed Betsworth, “we’re kind of small.”

So when, like a bolt out of the blue, he got an offer this summer from a new school parent to serve as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach it seemed like a gift from above.

Betsworth says Huskies headed in right direction

Ed Betsworth got excited a few weeks ago when a family from Wisconsin, pondering a possible move to Iowa, visited Cedar Valley Christian School to see if they might want to enroll their son in the private academy in Cedar Rapids.

Their son stood 6-foot-7 and weighed 230 pounds. Alas, nothing has come of it. Not yet, anyway.

"That would have been a nice addition," said Betsworth, who is the football coach for the fledgling 8-man team at Cedar Valley Christian.

The Huskies were supposed to have played a "Week Zero" game against Gilbertville Don Bosco Thursday night, but that was cancelled because too many of Cedar Valley's players were still on vacation and not available.

Huskies keep game with Central Elkader

The Cedar Valley Christian football team will play Central Elkader in an 8-man district game on Oct. 12 after all.

The Huskies, faced with a manpower problem, have canceled their season opener against Gilbertville Don Bosco on Aug. 16. They originally planned to skip their game against Central Elkader on Oct. 12 so Don Bosco could face Elkader, but now that won't be necessary.

"Don Bosco agreed to cancel the Week Zero game (Aug. 16) without taking the Week 8 game (Oct. 12)," Cedar Valley Christian Principal Jeff Pospisil reported Monday. "So we once again have a nine-game schedule and we don't have to worry about forfeits, district games and all that."

Cedar Valley cancels game, may forfeit another

The Cedar Valley Christian football team has canceled one game this season and may have to forfeit another due to a lack of players.

The Huskies were supposed to open the eight-man season with a home game against Gilbertville Don Bosco on Aug. 16, but they did a head count and realized they'd probably have only the bare minimum of eight players for the contest.

"I don't feel comfortable playing that game with only eight players," Cedar Valley Christian Principal Jeff Pospisil said.

Cedar Valley Christian notified Gilbertville Don Bosco and the Iowa High School Athletic Association of the problem. To help Don Bosco fill its schedule, Pospisil suggested his school step away from a scheduled game against Elkader Central on Oct. 12 and let Don Bosco play Elkader Central on that date instead.

Pospisil said the IHSAA agreed to the swap, but the game against Elkader Central was supposed to be an eight-man district game for Cedar Valley Christian and may result in a forfeit. "I'm not sure how the state is going to work that," he said.

Huskies cancel baseball date with Cal-Wheatland

The struggling Cedar Valley Christian baseball team cancelled Thursday's meeting with Calamus-Wheatland due to a lack of available players.

This is the third time this season the Huskies have cancelled games due to lack of players. They also cancelled games against Bellevue Marquette on June 5 and against Prince of Peace on June 8.

This is Cedar Valley Christian's first season of varsity baseball in the Iowa High School Athletic Association. The Huskies have an 0-and-20 record and have been outscored, 314-27, with 10 shutouts.

Cedar Valley Christian plans to play against Alburnett in the first round of the Class 1A district tournament this Tuesday at North Linn High School.
