Ertz shines at NAIA track meet

BROOKINGS, S.D. - Andrea Ertz of Mount Mercy enjoyed a strong  performance at the NAIA indoor track championships in South Dakota  Saturday.

Ertz finished third in the women's 1000 meter run in 2:54.42 and  placed sixth in the mile run in 4:59.32.

Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy placed seventh in the men's triple jump  at 48 feet, 3/4 inch. Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy finished ninth in  the women's 5000 meter run in 17:56.44.

Ertz has big Heart for Mustangs

MARYVILLE, Mo. - Andrea Ertz of Mount Mercy won two individual races  and anchored a relay to a second-place finish Friday and Saturday at  the Heart of America Conference indoor track meet.

Ertz captured the 1,000-meter race in 3:01.61 and claimed the 800 in  2:17.51. She anchored the 4x800 relay to second place in 9:39.14 with  Jessica Ertz, Kelsi Huhndorf and Mady Roth.

Mount Mercy tied for third place out of 11 schools in the women's team  standings.

Vanessa Cortes won the 5,000 by 21 seconds in 18:13.75 and  captured the 3000 in 10:38.19. Rachel Gadient won the women's  pentathlon with 3,361 points in the 60 hurdles, long jump, high jump,  800 and shot put.

Nickelson paces Mount Mercy track

MONMOUTH, Ill. - Luke Nickelson of Mount Mercy captured the high jump  and long jump at the Monmouth College Fighting Scots indoor track meet  Saturday.

Nickelson claimed the high jump at 6 feet, 4 inches and captured the  long jump at 22 feet and one-quarter inch.

Nathan Skala won the 800-meter run for the Mustangs in 2:01.29, Jacob  Blackmon took the 5000 in 15:53.91 and Aaron Golding placed second in  the 800 in 2:01.69 in a tight race with Skala.

Three members of the Mount Mercy women's team claimed titles. Andrea  Ertz won the 800 in 2:17.60, Vanessa Cortes captured the 3000 in  10:30.80 and Rachel Gadient took the high jump at 5 feet and  one-quarter inch. Gadiant placed third in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.32.

Cortes takes 3rd in NAIA marathon

GULF SHORES, Ala. – Vanessa Cortes of Mount Mercy University placed  third in the marathon at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships  this past weekend.

Cortes covered the 26 miles in 3 hours, 10 minutes, 51.2 seconds to  break the school record by nearly 10 minutes and become an NAIA  All-American. The marathon was a new race at the NAIA meet this season  and Mount Mercy dominated the event, with Andrea Ertz finishing in  ninth place and Alexa Zamora placing 10th.
