Linn-Mar - Boys Basketball

No.3 Lions escape Saints with strong finish

Jimmy Roth popped in five 3-pointers and scored a career-high 23 points Saturday night to help Linn-Mar survive a big scare against the Xavier Saints.

Just think what he might have accomplished if the referees hadn't called a phantom foul against him, causing him to miss the final 4 minutes and 41 seconds of the first half.

The third-ranked Lions rallied in the final two minutes and topped the Saints, 70-61, in a spirited Mississippi Valley Conference battle at Xavier.

One of the officials blew his whistle with 4:41 left in the second quarter and called a foul on No. 21, which was Roth, when in reality the foul was by No. 31, which was Andy Henry. The mistake sent Roth to the bench with two fouls, when he should have been able to stay comfortably on the floor with just one foul.

The referees huddled at halftime, agreed it was a mistake and changed the call, but the error cost Roth a big chunk of playing time in the first half and cost the Lions a big chunk of their offense. Roth had scored 14 points at the time of the phantom foul, leading Linn-Mar to a 29-14 lead, but the Saints rallied and pulled within 37-30 at halftime with Roth
sitting unfairly on the bench.

"It was tough," said Roth.

Roth and Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson both told the officials it was a mistake at the time, but it wasn't fixed until intermission.

"We didn't think that foul was on him," said Robertson. "I appreciate they corrected it, but I wish they had corrected it at the time. We sure would have liked to have him on the floor."

The Saints (4-8, 3-4) finished the first half with confidence and a burst of energy. They kept surging in the second half even with Roth on the floor.

Xavier vaulted into a 49-45 lead on a bucket by Ben McDermott late in the third quarter. The Saints grabbed another four-point lead at 57-53 on a 3-pointer by Brian Ropp with 4:45 left in the game, putting an upset within reach.

Roth tied the game, 59-59, with a 3-pointer from the corner with 2:52 remaining, but Tanner Frazier gave the Saints a 61-59 edge with two free throws with 2:38 left. The Saints had All-American Marcus Paige and the third-ranked Lions in trouble, but the visitors wiggled away.

Roth hit another 3-pointer to give Linn-Mar a 62-61 lead with 2:03 left, igniting an 11-0 run to finish the game. Zach Martins hit a 3-pointer to make it 65-61 and Paige nailed four straight free throws to make it 69-61 with 43.4 seconds to go. Martins hit a foul shot with 28.3 seconds left to finish the scoring.

Suddenly, Xavier's 61-59 advantage had become a 61-70 disadvantage in the space of 95 seconds. The Saints did not score in the last 2:37 of the ballgame.

"They hit their shots. They started executing, and we had some costly turnovers at the end," said Xavier forward Kevin Hosch. "It kind of got us out of our rhythm a little bit."

The Saints did everything but win the game. Paige finished with 21 points, but he had only 12 points entering the fourth quarter thanks to excellent defense by Xavier.

The Saints used a variety of defenses with a man-to-man, straight zone and box-and-one, keeping a fresh man on Paige and keeping him under wraps much of the game. "They did throw us off for awhile, and that was a great game plan by Xavier," said Paige.

North Carolina Coach Roy Williams attended the game to watch his prized recruit. Paige delivered in the clutch with his future coach in the stands, but Roth was the guy who gave the Lions the biggest boost of all.

"He was huge for us tonight," said Paige. "Our offense was a little out of synch. They threw a couple of different junk defenses at us and it kind of got us out of our flow.

"He really kept us in the game for awhile for that big stretch. And once we were able to get stops and other people finally hit some shots at the end, we pulled away."

Martins hit three 3-pointers and scored 12 points for Linn-Mar (9-2, 5-2).

Xavier Coach Matt Jenkins used an effective nine-man rotation and got important contributions from all nine guys. The Saints got 27 points from their reserves, whipping the Lions in bench points 27-5 and giving their team a chance to win.

"It's disappointing that we didn't pull it off," said Hosch. "Our bench came out and really sparked us and got some turnovers and hit some shots. They were great."

The Xavier super-subs were Matt Nelson (9 points), Frazier (8), Ropp (7) and Alec Clasen (3). Ben McDermott led a balanced attack with 10 points, with Mack Mattke contributing nine points and Trey Sampson adding seven markers.

"We did a great job, for the most part," said Jenkins. "We made a lot of progress in this game.

"Of course we're disappointed in not winning the game, but there are a lot of positives that out-weigh the negatives. For us, we saw a lot of progress tonight."

Linn-Mar made 11 3-pointers with five by Roth, three by Paige and three by Martins. Xavier made only two 3-pointers.

Lions turn back pesky Warriors, 63-45

For three quarters Friday night, Cedar Rapids Washington looked nothing like a team in search of its first win.

In the fourth quarter, Linn-Mar looked very much like the fifth-ranked Class 4A team in Iowa.

The Lions held a precarious 41-35 lead entering the fourth quarter, but took command behind all-state point guard Marcus Paige and pulled away for a 63-45 victory at Linn-Mar.

Paige finished with a game-high 24 points, but it wasn't a vintage performance from the North Carolina signee. He struggled with his shot through three quarters. In the fourth, he netted 13 points, including all seven of his free throw attempts.

With Paige off his game a bit, the Lions (8-2, 4-2) got a boost off their bench. Sophomore center Jon Schlotterback scored 10 points while junior Matt Meier added nine in a quick flurry that saw him hit back-to-back 3-pointers near the end of the third quarter and a conventional three-point play early in the fourth.

"It was one of those games where we just plodded through things for three quarters," said Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson. "I thought Jon was real good in there. And Matt Meier is really starting to give us something off the bench.

"He hit those back-to-back 3s and then the three-point play in the fourth quarter and that seemed to get Marcus going as well."

Meier's basket and free throw capped a 7-0 start to the fourth quarter, pushing Linn-Mar's margin to 13. That forced Washington to chase and eventually foul the Lions. Linn-Mar converted each of its 10 free throw attempts in the final eight minutes.

"We had a few breakdowns," said Washington Coach Brad Metzger. "You can't have that against a team like Linn-Mar. They spent way too much time at the free throw line and that hurts you when you pretty much have to play error-free against them."

The Warriors (0-9, 0-7) worked their offense well in the first half, but a 9-0 Linn-Mar run to start the second quarter gave the Lions a cushion and they took a 30-23 lead at the break.

Washington drew back to within 35-32 before Meier's 3-point run began. The Warriors suffered a blow late in the third period when junior forward Peter Holmes was hit over the eye, opening a cut. He was unable to return, but still led the Warriors with 11 points.

Robertson said he wasn't surprised by Washington's performance.

"Washington has a great tradition," he said. "Brad does a great job with their program and we knew they weren't going to back down from us. I thought they outplayed us in the first half and in parts of the second half as well."

Even though his team now sits at 0-9, Metzger is far from discouraged.

"They've got a lot to be proud of," he said. "They're improving. They're caring. They're trying. That's all we can ask for. The kids are getting better."

And that first win isn't far off in Metzger's eyes. "We're close, real close," he said.

WASHINGTON (45): David Tann 1 0-2 2, Cybryan Moa 3 1-2 9, Peter Holmes 4 3-4 11, Jason Oney 4 0-0 9, Sean Bredl 4 1-2 9, Paul Nash 0 0-0 0, David Rosenthal 2 0-0 5, Austin Bergstrom 0 0-1 0, Sam Bil 0 0-2 0. Totals 18 5-11 45.

Lassen hopes to be cleared on Wednesday

Wednesday will go a long way in determining the chances of Matt Lassen returning to the Linn-Mar basketball team this season.

The 6-foot-4 junior suffered a serious head injury in a game Dec. 9 against Iowa City West. He's been idle since then, but will be examined by a doctor Wednesday to see where he stands.

"We're kind of hoping that's the day he gets cleared and then we'll take some time to work him back in," Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson said Friday night. "When he gets released, we'd like to get him two weeks of full practices.

"We just don't know, he may go one day of practice and may not be able to go the next," Robertson said. "If we could get him back ideally by February, that would be great."

Lassen recently had an MRI that showed he was recovering from the head injury.

Lassen hit his head twice on the floor against Iowa City West, once after contact with a West player and again after teammate Marcus Paige accidentally landed on him. He suffered a concussion, bleeding on the brain and swelling. He also had a seizure moments after the accident while being treated on the floor.

Lassen spent four days in area hospitals and didn't attend school the rest of December. He has been back at school in January and has been attending practices, but not working out.

He has missed just a half-day of school since the break and was on the bench for the Lions' 63-45 win Friday night over Cedar Rapids Washington.

Linn-Mar boys roar to 5th straight win

There was no basketball “hangover” for the Linn-Mar boys Tuesday night when the Lions returned to their home court after a pair of wins last weekend in Sioux City.

The fifth-ranked Lions rolled to their fifth straight win, routing Dubuque Hempstead, 70-37, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Linn-Mar (7-2, 3-2 MVC) was paced by three Lions in double figures. Marcus Paige had 25 points, Matt Meier notched 14, and Andy Henry added 10.

Hempstead (0-8, 0-6) was paced by Josh Dolson's 14 points. Sharpshooter Jake Weber added 11 points.

Linn-Mar Coach Chris Robertson said it was great to return home. He said the defending state champion Lions have set some short-term goals.

“We want to battle for the No. 1 or No. 2 seed in our eventual substate and we’ll continue to shoot for a goal of a conference title in this league,” he said.

There is no question this team receives many raves due to the exemplary play of Paige, but Robertson said other players are starting to find their groove.

“we hope that Jimmy Roth continues to step up and Andy Henry is certainly playing with more confidence," he said. " We hope to get even more great play from Derik Gogg on the inside and if we can continue to have two or three players stepping it up along with Marcus, we will continue to play well and have good results.”

Roth did step it up with eight points and solid floor play, Henry had two 3-point goals to his credit and the entire Lion squad shot well from the outside, cashing in on an impressive 13 3-point goals.  Paige netted five long bombs in the first half and had a massive dunk that electrified the student body en route to 19 first half points.  He duplicated the dunk feat in the second half along with scoring four free throws.

Hempstead led 8-7 midway through the first quarter, but that was the only lead the Mustangs mustered.

Both teams committed 15 fouls and both shot 9-for-13 from the charity line.

Linn-Mar's next game is Friday at home against winless Cedar Rapids Washington.

Grant Gibbs loving life at Creighton

Grant Gibbs has found basketball nirvana at Creighton University, but it took a few trials and tribulations.

He's had shoulder surgery for a torn labrum, two knee procedures to relieve a serious case of tendinitis and transferred from Gonzaga to Creighton after two years.

Now the Linn-Mar High School graduate is playing a major role for the 24th-ranked team in the country and loving every minute of it.

Creighton is 13-2 overall and tied for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference. Doug McDermott gets most of the headlines, but Gibbs has started all 15 games and has helped the Bluejays with his versatility and leadership.
