Besong named Metro Player of the Year

Washington senior midfielder Brandon Besong has been named the Metro boys soccer Player of the Year by a vote of the Metro coaches.

Besong helped Washington to a 16-3 record and state tournament berth. He has signed a letter of intent to play college soccer at Missouri State.

Metro scoring leader Garet Christianson and his brother Gabe Christianson were named to the All-Metro first team, The Cougars also have qualified for the state tournament.

Xavier had three first teamers, forward Zach Smith, midfielder Chad Gilmer and defender Tim Bouchard. The Saints' Amir Hadzic was named Coach of the Year. Xavier will defend its Class 2A title at the state tournament, beginning Thursday in Des Moines.

Nominations set for Linn County Athletes of Year

Twenty-eight athletes from 14 high schools have been nominated for the Linn County Male & Female Athlete of the Year awards.

The winners will be announced at the 11th Annual Celebration of Sports Banquet on Sunday, June 12 at the Clarion Hotel & Convention Center in Cedar Rapids. The event begins at 4 p.m.

The male nominees from the Metro area are Conner Herman (Jefferson), Ryan Sheldon (Kennedy), Matt Stocker (Prairie), Alex Carr (Washington), Nate Even (Xavier), Matt Bohannon (Linn-Mar) and Kasey Semler (Marion).

The female nominees from the Metro area Ashley Madsen (Jefferson), Shauna Happel (Kennedy), Katie Carver (Prairie), Layloni Beard (Washington), Tyler Sampson (Xavier), Kiah Stokes (Linn-Mar) and Leah Smith (Marion).

Iowa State men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg will be the featured speaker at the banquet. The banquet is sponsored by the Cedar Rapids Area Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Tickets cost $30 per person or $240 for a table of eight and can be purchased by calling 319-398-5009 ext. 125.

12 state champions pace all-Metro track squads

Twelve state champions highlight the all-Metro track teams for the 2011 campaign.

Brooke Foreman of Washington (400 hurdles), Amanda Piche of Linn-Mar (discus) and the Jefferson 4x200 relay of Maliya Rattliffe, Summer Carber, Taylor Jacobson and Rachel Broghammer are the state champions on the all-Metro girls team.

Kyle Dunn of Linn-Mar (400 dash, 400 hurdles, 110 hurdles), Sam Joens of Prairie (discus) and the Prairie 4x800 relay of Kyle Stocker, Ryan Smith, Justin Burns and Matt Stocker are the state champions on the all-Metro boys team.

Linn-Mar places 2 on all-Metro boys tennis

Linn-Mar's Brady Anderson and Tyler McCann head up the All-Metro Boys Tennis team released Thursday.

Linn-Mar was 15-3 this season and reached the substate tournament final, where it was beaten by Iowa City West. Lions Coach Chris Wundram was named coach of the year.

Anderson, a freshman, was Linn-Mar's No. 1 singles player and McCann was the Lions' No. 2 player.

Other members of the first team are Washington's Charlie Hammond, Kennedy's Riley Galbraith, Marion's Brandon Hornback and Jefferson's Eddie Segarra. Galbraith plays both soccer and tennis and was named the MVC Mississippi Division tennis athlete of the year.

Cougars, J-Hawks and Saints in same baseball substate

The Cedar Rapids Kennedy baseball team had to defeat Jefferson and Xavier this week to win the Metro Tournament, and the Cougars might have to beat them again to reach the Class 4A state tournament.

The IHSAA has assigned the Cougars, J-Hawks and Saints to Substate 3 for the postseason tournament, along with Dubuque Hempstead, Dubuque Senior and Western Dubuque. The substate champion will advance to the state baseball tournament in Des Moines.

The IHSAA has announced the groupings for each Class 4A substate, but the sites and pairings will be announced later. The games are scheduled for July 15, 18 and 20.

The Linn-Mar Lions and Prairie Hawks were assigned to Substate 2 with Cedar Falls, Mason City, Waterloo East and Waterloo West.

The Washington Warriors were assigned to Substate 5 with Burlington, Iowa City High, Iowa City West, Muscatine and North Scott.

The Marion Indians will play Center Point-Urbana in the Class 3A district semifinals on July 15. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Vinton-Shellsburg. Vinton-Shellsburg will face Union (LaPorte City) in the other semifinal game in District 7.

The District 7 champion will face the District 8 champion in a substate final on July 20 for a berth in the Class 3A state tournament. South Tama, Williamsburg, Benton Community and Grinnell are in District 8.
