Bergstrom honored in MVC soccer

The Mississippi Valley Conference soccer coaches have named Austin Bergstrom of Cedar Rapids Washington as the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division for 2013.

Mike Robertson and Steve Robertson, the co-coaches at Kennedy, were named Coaches of the Year in the Mississippi Division.

Jack Sundermann and Jacob Bjornsen joined Bergstrom as first-team selections in the Valley Division from Washington. Ben Johnson (Linn-Mar), Hunter Wong (Linn-Mar), Isaac Frisch (Xavier), Eli Smith (Xavier), Logan Rinderknecht (Prairie) and Matt Christen (Prairie) also were named first-team picks in the Valley Division.

Jones smashes 800 records for J-Hawks

DUBUQUE - Cedar Rapids Jefferson senior Timauntay Jones shattered a pair of ancient records in the 800-meter run Monday when he was timed in 1 minute, 53.36 seconds at the MVC Mississippi Division meet in Dubuque.

Jones broke the Jefferson school record of 1:55.4 that was set by Ralf Trimble in 1959. He also broke the Mississippi Valley Conference mark of 1:53.6 that was established by Mark Steffen of Davenport West in 1968.

Jones, who has signed to run at the University of Northern Iowa, was named the Mississippi Division Athlete of the Year for his exploits.

Decker steers Lions to 2nd in MVC

CEDAR FALLS - Amber Decker captured the 400 meter dash and 800 meter run Monday to help the Linn-Mar Lions finish in second place at the MVC Valley Division track meet in Cedar Falls.

Maleta Montague won the 100 hurdles for Linn-Mar. The Lions also claimed the distance medley.

Halle Lueck won the long jump and Leslie Harder captured the high jump to help the Prairie Hawks finish third in the team standings.

Estelle, J-Hawks set records at Mississippi girls meet

IOWA CITY - Kennedy's Marissa Estelle set a record in the 100 meter hurdles Monday night and helped lead the Cougars to a second-place finish in the Mississippi Valley Conference Mississippi Division girls track meet at Iowa City West.

Estelle ran the hurdles in 15.32 seconds, breaking the former mark of 15.41 set a year ago by Cedar Rapids Washington's Brooke Foreman.

Jefferson set the only other record at the meet, shattering the shuttle hurdle relay mark by 1.71 seconds. The old mark was set last year by Dubuque Senior.

Beyer tops Corbett in Valley 400

Tristan Beyer finally beat Nick Corbett in a 400-meter dash Monday.

Now he wants to do it again. And again.

Beyer, a junior from Prairie, and Corbett, a senior from Washington, are two of the top quarter-milers in the state and they clashed Monday in the Mississippi Valley Conference division meet at Kingston Stadium.
