Saints climb to 4th in Register grid ratings

The Xavier Saints climbed two spots to No. 4 in the Class 4A football rankings Sunday in the Des Moines Register.

The Saints (4-0) walloped Dubuque Wahlert, 53-14, Friday night. They have outscored their four opponents, 198-35, this season.

Xavier has rolled by Dubuque Hempstead (48-7), Jefferson (49-0), Prairie (48-14) and Wahlert (53-14). Those four teams have a composite 4-12 record.

The Saints host the winless Kennedy Cougars (0-4) Friday night.

Ankeny is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, followed by three Mississippi Valley Conference teams in Cedar Falls, Iowa City West and Xavier. Iowa City High is ranked seventh and Dubuque Senior is ninth, putting five MVC teams in the top 10.

Decorah continues to lead the Class 3A rankings.

Jenks ranked 6th in state X-C poll

Linn-Mar freshman Stephanie Jenks jumped into the state cross country rankings Wednesday at No. 6 in Class 4A after winning the Cedar Rapids Invitational last week.

Jenks is a nationally ranked triathlete who also competes for the Linn-Mar swim team. She got a late start in the cross country season, but dominated the competition in her first race last Thursday in Cedar Rapids.

Shannon Gorman of Cedar Rapids Washington is ranked 10th in Class 4A in the new poll.

Josh Evans of Linn-Mar is ranked No. 2 among Class 4A boys. He trails Ben Anderson of West Des Moines Valley, who defeated Evans for the state cross country title last fall.

Etienne Nzoyisaba of Washington is ranked 10th in Class 4A. Mitch Pritts of Prairie is 12th, Tanner Rathje of Linn-Mar 13th, Chase Grabau of Linn-Mar 16th, Daniel Murphy of Linn-Mar 18th and Joe Berry of Washington 21st.

Alyssa Averhoff of Kennedy is ranked 16th among the girls in Class 4A. Maddie Saville of Linn-Mar is 17th, Allison Culver of Kennedy 18th, Lauren Meyer of Kennedy 23rd, Katie Wampole of Kennedy 24th and Rachel Perry of Linn-Mar 26th.

Ben Schueler of Xavier is ranked 29th among Class 3A boys.

The team rankings were not updated on the Iowa Track Coaches Association website as of 7 p.m. Wednesday. The latest team rankings are from Sept. 5, which saw the Linn-Mar boys and girls both ranked No. 2 in the state. Dowling is ranked No. 1 in both polls.

Washington is ranked 10th in Class 4A boys and Prairie is 11th.

Kennedy is ranked No. 4 among Class 4A girls.

Girls state swim meet at Marshalltown through 2017

The Board of Directors of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union unanimously approved the Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA as the host venue of the Iowa Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet through the 2017 season at its September 11 meeting.

“We are very pleased that Marshalltown will be the home for the Iowa Girls State Swimming and Diving meet for another five years,” said IGHSAU Executive Director Mike Dick. “The Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA is an outstanding facility and we have a wonderful working relationship with their outstanding staff.”

The Marshalltown YMCA-YWCA has hosted the Iowa Girls State Swimming and Diving Meet since it opened in January of 2004.

Saints climb to 6th in Register poll

The Xavier Saints climbed from No. 7 to No. 6 in the Des Moines Register's Class 4A football rankings Sunday morning.

The Saints (3-0) walloped Prairie, 48-14, Friday night in a battle of unbeatens.

Ankeny replaced Cedar Falls atop the 4A poll. The Tigers are second, followed by Dowling, Bettendorf and Iowa City West.
