Metro teams hold spots in rankings

The Xavier Saints, Kennedy Cougars and Washington Warriors held their spots in the Des Moines Register football rankings Sunday following big victories Friday night.

Xavier (5-0) stayed No. 4 in Class 3A, Kennedy (6-0) remained No. 5 in Class 4A and Washington (5-1) stayed No. 6 in Class 4A.

The Saints dumped Western Dubuque 35-12, the Cougars topped Linn-Mar 31-6 and the Warriors walloped Ottumwa 53-7.

Pella stayed No. 1 in Class 3A and Dowling stayed No. 1 in Class 4A.

CLASS 3A

1. Pella (6-0), 2. West Delaware (6-0), 3. Webster City (6-0), 4. Xavier (5-0), 5. Independence (6-0), 6. Dallas Center-Grimes (5-1), 7. Norwalk (5-1), 8. Harlan (5-1), 9. Sergeant Bluff-Luton (5-1), 10. Glenwood (6-0).

CLASS 4A

Register likes Metro football teams

Xavier, Kennedy and Washington continued to figure prominently in the new football rankings Sunday by the Des Moines Register.

Xavier is ranked No. 4 in Class 3A, Kennedy is No. 5 in Class 4A and Washington is No. 6 in Class 4A.

Xavier (4-0) rolled by Maquoketa, 42-13, Friday night. Kennedy (5-0) dominated Jefferson, 35-7. Washington (4-1) rallied to beat Muscatine on the road, 35-21.

Pella is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and Dowling is No. 1 in Class 4A.

CLASS 3A

1. Pella (5-0), 2. West Delaware (5-0), 3. Webster City (5-0), 4. Xavier (4-0), 5. Independence (5-0), 6. Dallas Center-Grimes (4-1), 7. Norwalk (4-1), 8. Harlan (4-1), 9. Sergeant Bluff-Luton (4-1), 10. Glenwood (5-0).

Cougars, Saints 6th in Register poll

The Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints both climbed one spot in the high school football rankings Sunday by the Des Moines Register.

Kennedy (3-0) moved from No. 7 to No. 6 in Class 4A and Xavier climbed form No. 7 to No. 6 in Class 3A.

The Cougars whipped North Scott, 42-0, Friday. The Saints rallied to edge then-No. 8 Solon, 22-19.

Washington (2-1), which downed Iowa City West, 42-14, is ranked No. 8 in Class 4A.

West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Pella is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

1. West Des Moines Valley (3-0), 2. Cedar Falls (3-0), 3. Bettendorf (3-0), 4. Dowling (2-0), 5. Fort Dodge (3-0), 6. Kennedy (3-0), 7. Johnston (3-0), 8. Washington (2-1), 9. Muscatine (3-0), 10. Ankeny (2-1).

Register likes Wash, Kennedy, Xavier

The Washington Warriors, Kennedy Cougars and Xavier Saints have cracked the top-10 in the preseason football rankings by the Des Moines Register.

Washington is ranked No. 6 in Class 4A, Kennedy is ranked No. 9 in Class 4A and Xavier is ranked No. 8 in Class 3A.

The Warriors finished 13-1 last season and played for the Class 4A title. The Cougars were 3-8 last year and made the second round of the playoffs. The Saints went 9-4 and reached the semifinals of the Class 3A playoffs.

West Des Moines Valley is ranked No. 1 in Class 4A and Pella is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Xavier place-kicker Dallas Klein and Kennedy linebacker Shaun Beyer were named to the All-Iowa Preseason Team by the Register.

1. West Des Moines Valley, 2. Cedar Falls, 3. Ames, 4. Bettendorf, 5. Dowling, 6. Washington, 7. Fort Dodge, 8. Waukee, 9. Kennedy, 10. Urbandale.

Dick will retire as IGHSAU boss

Mike Dick, Executive Director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union since 2008, announced his retirement at the June 16 IGHSAU Board of Directors meeting. The IGHSAU Board of Directors accepted his resignation effective Aug. 31, 2016.

“I am proud to have served as the Executive Director of the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union for the last seven years,” he stated. “I was able to fulfill a dream of mine by working for the IGHSAU. It has been a pleasure to serve so many great schools, administrators, staff, officials, coaches and, especially, the Iowa Girl.

“The time is right to retire. My family has always catered to me and my job,” said Dick. “The time has come for me to give my time back to them.”

“Speaking on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to thank Mike for his vision and commitment to the Iowa Girl,” said IGHSAU Board of Directors President Dr. Greg Thomas. “Mike has always put the best interests of the thousands of girls that participate in our activities first. Our coaches, officials, schools, and especially high school girls are better because of his leadership.”
