Prairie girls bump off Jefferson

The Prairie girls bowling team downed Jefferson 2,762 to 2,415 Friday at May City Bowl.

Megan Kitzmiller had a 203 game and 370 series for the J-Hawks. Madison Rasmussen was close behind with a 368 series.

Ashley Sundstrom rolled a 216 game and 404 series for the Prairie Hawks.

Sturtz leads J-Hawks by Prairie

The Jefferson boys bowling team topped Prairie 3,001 pins to 2,455 Friday at May City Bowl.

Hunter Sturtz had a 236 game and a 451 series to lead the J-Hawks.

Matt Galloro rolled a 190 game and a 364 series for the Prairie Hawks.

Jeff boys dunked by City High

IOWA CITY – Dennis McKinney scored 15 points to lead the Jefferson boys basketball in a 58-41 loss to Iowa City High on Friday.

The Little Hawks jumped to a 22-7 lead after the first quarter and the J-Hawks (1-3) could not recover.

Micah Martin scored 15 points and Naeem Smith added 13 for Iowa City High (2-2).

Joens sparks Little Hawks by Jeff

Ashley Joens had 31 points for the ninth-ranked Iowa City High girls basketball team as the Little Hawks handed Jefferson a 66-51 loss Friday at Jefferson.

Kaylee Donner scored 13 points for the J-Hawks, who fell to 3-4. Avery Guy added 10 points.

Iowa City High is 5-1.

No. 7 J-Hawks stick Lions, Trojans

Colten Mastin, Brenden Baker, Dalton Mastin and Kyle Briggs collected two pins Thursday night as the seventh-ranked Jefferson wrestling team topped Linn-Mar and Iowa City West in a double-dual at Linn-Mar.

The J-Hawks downed Linn-Mar, 56-21, and defeated Iowa City West, 44-26. Linn-Mar took care of Iowa City West, 44-24, in the other match.

Joseph Sibomana, Matt Culver, Nick Dreckman and David Bonner also won both of their matches for Jefferson.

Cole Kraklio, Alex Streicher and Shea Hartzler were double-winners for Linn-Mar. Hartzler is ranked No. 1 at 160 pounds.

Wash nips Jeff in MVC swim meet

The Washington Warriors edged the Jefferson J-Hawks, 86-84, in a Mississippi Valley Conference swimming meet Thursday by winning the 400-yard freestyle relay in the final event on the card.

Jeremy Throndson and Matt Jackson were triple-winners for Washington. Throndson captured the 200 free and 500 free and swam on the triumphant 400 freestyle relay. Jackson took the 200 IM and 100 butterfly and swam on the 400 freestyle relay.

Paul Hummell was a four-time winner for Jefferson. He claimed the 50 free and 100 breaststroke and swam on the victorious 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

Will Carius popped in 25 points Tuesday night and Carter Milam added 20 as Pleasant Valley defeated Jefferson, 63-48, in a boys basketball game at Jefferson.

Dennis McKinney tossed in 21 points for Jefferson (1-2).

Prairie girls bounce J-Hawks

In his second season with the vastly improved Prairie girls basketball team, Josh Bentley may have found the secret of coaching.

“When the shots are falling, it makes the coach look good,” he said Tuesday night after his near-flawless crew surprisingly throttled Jefferson, 57-31, at Prairie.

And it was no fluke that Prairie had a hot shooting night by hitting 22 of 50 (44 percent), according to star senior guard Olivia Usher.

"Defensively, we really came out ready to play,” she said. “When we’re playing good defense, it makes our offense work a lot better.”

In an almost perfect performance, Usher led the Hawks with 19 points, with eight of them coming in a 20-2 Prairie run after the score was tied 9-9.

J-Hawks crown 3 champs at Keith Young

CEDAR FALLS - Brenden Baker, Kyle Briggs and Matt Culver won titles for Cedar Rapids Jefferson at the Keith Young wrestling tournament in Cedar Falls Saturday.

The J-Hawks finished second in the 16-team tournament with 159.5 points. West Des Moines Valley won the title with 224.

Baker pinned Riley Wright of Denver-Tripoli for the 120-pound title in 1:15. Briggs posted a 9-2 verdict over Zack Wagenhoffe of Waverly-Shell Rock for top honors at 152. Culver nipped Austin Stotts of West Des Moines Valley, 5-3, for the crown at 170.

Kennedy finished 13th with 72 points.

Jefferson girls dunked by No.8 Valley

Zoe Young scored 17 points Saturday afternoon as the eighth-ranked West Des Moines Valley girls basketball team defeated Jefferson, 80-60, in the Jefferson gym.

Kennedy Dighton popped in three 3-pointers and led Jefferson (3-2) with 22 points and nine rebounds. Kylie Wise also hit three triples and scored 14 points for the J-Hawks. Emily Oler added 10 points.

Hannah Fuller had 16 points for Valley (3-0).
