Young J-Hawks upset No.9 Cougars

The young kids on the Cedar Rapids Jefferson girls basketball team are growing up before our very eyes.

Freshman Avery Guy played the best game of her young career and scored 15 points Friday night as the J-Hawks upended ninth-ranked Kennedy, 59-47, to snap a 13-game losing streak against the Cougars.

Sophomore Amanda Ollinger also scored 15 points for Jefferson and freshman Kennedy Dighton had 12 as the three talented youngsters combined for 42 markers.

The experienced Cougars (14-5, 8-3) had four seniors and a junior in the starting lineup, but the young J-Hawks controlled the game from start to finish.

Kluth, Baccam lead J-Hawks' rout of Trojans

WATERLOO - Austin Kluth and Victor Baccam were on fire once again for Jefferson on Friday. Kluth rolled a 518 series and Baccam had a 507 that fueled the J-Hawks' 3218-2877 rout of Waterloo East in boys bowling.

Kluth shot games of 268 and 250, Baccam games of 263 and 244. Hunter Sturtz had a 245 high game and 440 series.

Jefferson held a 436-pin lead after the first round.

Jeff girls fall to Waterloo East

WATERLOO - Waterloo East overcame a slim Jefferson lead in the Baker round and beat the J-Hawks, 2649-2571, Friday in girls bowling.

Rylea Bennett was high for the J-Hawks with a 223 game and 374 series.  Abbi Stastny had a 213 game.

Waterloo East held a 20-pin lead after the first round that Jefferson erased in the first Baker game. East stormed back to claim the match.

J-Hawk grapplers sweep MVC duals

WATERLOO - Michael Moncivais and Kelly May collected two pins Thursday night as Jefferson swept a pair of Mississippi Valley Conference wrestling meets in Waterloo.

The J-Hawks defeated Waterloo West, 50-19, and whipped Iowa City High, 71-9.

Brenden Baker, Matt Culver and Luke Sedlacek also had two victories on the mat for Jefferson.

Sullivan, Hunt to sign LOIs

Two Jefferson athletes will sign national letters-of-intent with colleges Thursday in a ceremony at the school.

Layne Sullivan will sign to play football at Wayne State, Neb., and Spencer Hunt will sign to play baseball at North Iowa Community College in Mason City.

Sullivan was a two-way starter at quarterback and safety as a junior and senior for the J-Hawks. He completed 46.2 percent of his passes for 1,178 yards and six touchdowns as a senior. He also was Jefferson's leading rusher with 595 yards and five touchdowns.

Hunt is a catcher-third baseman. He batted .248 with four home runs and 28 RBI as a junior last summer.

 

   

Wahlert rocks J-Hawks, 65-33

DUBUQUE - Cordell Pemsl scored 21 points to lead Class 3A No.2 Dubuque Wahlert's 65-33 rout of Jefferson in an MVC boys basketball game Tuesday night at Wahlert.

Jacob Olson scored 18 points to lead Jefferson (5-11, 3-9).

Wahlert is 14-2, 11-1.

Hindt, Baccam lead Jeff boys past CF

WATERLOO - Jefferson's Christian Hindt and Victor Baccam were on fire rolling series of 484 and 490, respectively, that led the J-Hawks past Cedar Falls, 3301-2846, Tuesday in boys bowling.

Baccam rolled high game of 267. Hindt's high game was 247.

Austin Kluth had a 416 series and Noah Tiedtke a 409 for Jefferson.

Jeff girls roll past Cedar Falls

WATERLOO - Savannah Fowler had the bowl rolling Tuesday with a 210 game and 387 series that led Jefferson past Cedar Falls, 2584-2467, in girls bowling.

Holly Miller shot a 202 game for the J-Hawks, who built a 124-pin cushion in the first round.

Huge 3rd quarter powers J-Hawks to win

Jefferson outscored Waterloo West 23-2 in the third quarter and rolled to a 68-45 win in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game Saturday at Jefferson.

Jacob Olson scored 29 points to lead the J-Hawks (5-10, 3-8). Brandon Wiederin and Tyler Konigsmark added 10 points apiece.

Jefferson turned a 27-25 halftime deficit into a 48-29 lead by the end of the third quarter.

The J-Hawks made 23 of 29 free throws. Three Wahawks fouled out.

Jefferson girls overwhelm Clinton, 46-22

CLINTON - Amanda Ollinger scored 18 points to lead Jefferson past Clinton, 46-22, Saturday in a non-conference girls basketball game.

Jefferson (8-10) held a 28-13 lead at halftime.

Clinton fell to 3-14.
