Kennedy, Wash take 3rd, 4th

The Kennedy and Washington boys bowling teams placed third and fourth, respectively, in a Class 3A state qualifier tournament Tuesday at Lancer Lanes and did not advance to the state meet.

Cedar Falls won with 3,288 pins and earned an automatic berth to the state tournament, followed by Bettendorf with 3,142, Kennedy with 2,974 and Washington with 2,670.

Brandon Jerome of Cedar Falls was the individual champion with a 533 series.

Max Hiatt rolled a 219 game and James Jambois had a 392 series to lead the Cougars.

Kelley tops all-Metro swim team

Washington junior Cameron Kelley, who won the 200 freestyle and set a state record in the 500 freestyle at Saturday’s boys state swimming meet, earned the All-Metro Athlete of the Year Award in boys swimming, it was announced Tuesday.

Kelley won the 200 freestyle in 1 minute, 39.50 seconds in Marshalltown and set the state record of 4:39.96 while winning the 500 freestyle.

Coach of the Year honors were shared by Chris Cruise of Washington and Ryan York of Jefferson and their staffs.

Six other Washington swimmers earned first-team honors, including seniors Nick Saulnier, Mitchell Anderson and Matt Jackson, sophomores Kaleb Donelsand George Durin and freshman Jeremy Throndson.

Kitsos wins Metro Spotlight Award

Stefan Kitsos of Cedar Rapids Kennedy is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school boys this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Kitsos, a senior, turned in an exceptional performance for Kennedy at the state swimming meet in Marshalltown on Saturday and helped the Cougars finish 11th in the team standings.

Kitsos placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 57.50 seconds and finished fourth in the 50 freestyle in 21.22 seconds. In addition, he helped the Cougars place sixth in the 200 medley relay (1:37.08) and place 11th in the 200 freestyle relay (1:27.75).

Kennedy girls fall to Cedar Falls

WATERLOO – Rachael Sears shot a 202 game and a 362 series to lead the Cedar Falls girls bowling team in a 2,415 to 2,261 victory over Kennedy in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet Friday at Maple Lanes.

Sydney Helms shot a 328 series for the Cougars.

KENNEDY: Sydney Helms 140-188=328, Alyssa Wiedemeier 155-171=326, Jamie Milota 165-156=321, Sam Eltze 147-131=278, Cate Oliphant 130-109=239, Baileigh Allen 94-102=196.

CEDAR FALLS: Rachael Sears 202-159=361, Madison Standing 179-146=325, Meredith Standing 165-154=319, Jayden Robe 138-179=317, Emily Barth 167-144=311, Megan McDonell 145-145=290.

Kennedy: 1,492-769=2,261.

Green rolls 494 series for Cougars

WATERLOO – Nick Green shot a 258 game and a 494 series, but Cedar Falls edged the Kennedy boys bowling team, 3,118 pins to 3,030, in a Mississippi Valley Conference meet Friday at Maple Lanes.

Nick Hanson rolled a 429 series for the Tigers.

KENNEDY: Nick Green 258-236=494, Dakota Dippel 199-267=466, Max Hiatt 203-171=374, James Jambois 202-168=370, Bert Goodwin 180-144=324, Nathan Lindo 127-148=275.

CEDAR FALLS: Nick Hanson 246-183=429, Avery Bauer 204-256=460, Brandon Jerome 205-236=441, Dalton Swatek-Briggs 181-224=405, Jackson Reynolds 183-205=388, Dylan Swatek-Briggs 179-156=335.
