Enyart leads Prairie runners into new year

The girls on the Cedar Rapids Prairie cross country team hope to make great strides this fall. First of all, they'll have to keep up with their new coach.

Corrie Enyart ran a half-marathon in the Twin Cities last year and has a passion for the sport, but this is the first time she's coached a team. "This is a new endeavor for me," she said Thursday before practice.

Enyart ran track and cross country at Cedar Rapids Jefferson, graduating in 1996. She was a sprinter on the track team and placed at the state meet, but now she's an active distance runner in road races.

Hammer on IHSBCA all-state 1st team

Alex Hayden capped a brilliant season for the Kennedy High School baseball team Thursday by being named to the 2012 All-State "Super Team" by the Iowa High chool Baseball Coaches Association.

Eleven Metro players were selected for the all-state teams by the IHSBCA, a testament to the talent in the Metro area this year.

Hayden was named as a utility player on the "Super Team," an elite unit that honors the top 15 players in the state, regardless of classification. He compiled an 11-2 record on the mound with a 0.99 ERA, hit .386 with 28 RBIs and excelled at second base.

Cody Bell of Kennedy, Josh Jahlas of Kennedy, Jason Velvick of Prairie, Brennan Hammer of Prairie and Jake Stolley of Linn-Mar were named first team all-state in Class 4A.

Meeker made splash for Prairie as freshman

Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey knew Bryce Meeker was certainly big enough to play varsity football as a freshman last year, but he didn't know if he was tough enough.

Then he found out.

"It was during the summer, and I can pinpoint the moment when we knew we were going to be OK with it," Morrissey said Tuesday.

The coaches from Coe College conducted a team camp for the Prairie Hawks and Solon Spartans during the summer of 2011 and Meeker was invited to attend. It was just a camp, but football is a rough sport.

Hanna picks Upper Iowa for basketball

Jace Hanna of Cedar Rapids Prairie committed to play basketball at Upper Iowa University Monday night, Prairie football coach Mike Morrissey said Tuesday.

Hanna is the starting quarterback for the Prairie football team as well as the point guard for the school's basketball team.

Hanna, 6-foot-1, averaged 9.5 points, 3 assists and 2 steals for the Hawks this past season as a junior. Prairie finished with a 9-13 record.

Hynek resigns as Prairie softball coach

Kimi Hynek has resigned as the softball coach at Cedar Rapids Prairie, the SourceMedia prep website reported Monday.

Hynek was Prairie's head coach for 10 years. The Hawks finished with an 8-28 record this season.
