Prairie High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Prairie suspended in 3rd inning

The Marshalltown at Prairie Class 4A substate semifinal baseball game Monday night was called after a nearly two-hour delay because of lightning and rain.

It will resume Tuesday at 7 p.m. with the Bobcats (17-24) leading 3-2 and Prairie (26-12) batting with two outs in the bottom of the third inning and a runner on first.

Marshalltown scored once in the second inning after two singles against Hawk starting pitcher Mitch Adams. They scored twice more in the third thanks to a triple to right field by Hunter Hillygus and a wild pitch.

Surging Hawks ready for No.2 Ankeny

The Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team became an overnight sensation last Tuesday when it stunned fourth-ranked Pleasant Valley, 3-2, for a cherished spot in the Class 5A state tournament this week in Fort Dodge.

The Prairie community has embraced the Hawks with open arms.

"It's been crazy," said pitcher Katie Kuch. "It's blown up social media and everyone has been talking about it."

The acclaim may have come overnight for the team, but the hard work and dedication took five long years for the fifth-year seniors on the club.

Shrine Bowl is 'bittersweet' for Hanna

Jace Hanna is excited about playing in the 41st Annual Shrine Bowl on July 27, but it's also tinged with a little sadness.

The Shrine Bowl will be the last organized football game of Hanna's career, unless he changes his mind and decides to try football in college at some point.

As it stands now, Hanna will report to Upper Iowa University in August to begin classes and become a member of the UIU basketball team.

His football days will be done after he plays quarterback for the South squad in the Shrine game.

Prairie slams 'Hammer' on Wahawks

Brennan Hammer is still waiting to pitch his best game of the season for the Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team.

It could come in the Class 4A substate finals against Xavier next week, if the Hawks continue to take care of business.

Hammer struck out eight batters in 4 2/3 innings Friday night as Prairie spanked Waterloo West, 9-2, in the substate opener at Prairie.

The sixth-ranked Hawks (26-12) will host Marshalltown (17-24) in the substate semifinals Monday at 7 p.m., with the winner meeting the 10th-ranked Xavier Saints in the substate finals Wednesday at Xavier.

Prairie stuns No.4 PV for trip to state

BETTENDORF - Joe Yegge made a bold promise to the members of the Cedar Rapids Prairie softball team when he became their new head coach.

"I told them when I took the job in the fall, if they did everything we asked, I promised them we'd get to state," Yegge said with a slightly mischievous smile.

It came true Tuesday night.

The Prairie Hawks shocked No.4 Pleasant Valley, 3-2, in the regional finals in Bettendorf and claimed their first trip to the state tournament.

Prairie (28-14) will face No.2 Ankeny (32-10) in the quarterfinals of the Class 5A state tournament in Fort Dodge on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
