Xavier High School - Cedar Rapids, Iowa

1962 Regis state champs honored Saturday at Xavier

The Regis High School boys basketball team that won the state championship in 1962 will be honored on its 50-year anniversary this Saturday at Xavier High School.

Head coach Bob Jennings, assistant coach Dick Breitbach and members of the team will attend the celebration.

There will be a team reception and film viewing at Xavier from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30, followed by a reception for friends and family from 4:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

The receptions will take place inside the main entrance to Xavier High School, located at 6300 42nd Street NE in Cedar Rapids.

Xavier hosts Western Dubuque in a sophomore/varsity doubleheader that starts at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The 1962 state champs will be recognized during halftime of the varsity game.

Regis defeated Laurens, 76-64, for the 1962 state title. There was only one classification that year, so Regis was the champion of the entire state.

Wright 4A second team all-state by Register

DES MOINES - Linn-Mar High School seniors Andy Henry and Mark Atwater were named to the Des Moines Register Elite All-State Football Team Sunday morning.

Henry made the Elite Offense at wide receiver after catching 53 passes with 18 touchdowns. Atwater was named to the Elite Defense after starring at linebacker.

Atwater also excelled as a quarterback for the Lions, but Blake Gimbel of Marshalltown and Kyle Starcevich of Southeast Polk were honored as the top quarterbacks in the state.

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Sean Bredl and Xavier senior William Wright were named to the Class 4A Second Team Offense as linemen. Cedar Rapids Kennedy senior Logan LeTellier was honored on the Class 4A Second Team Defense as a lineman.

Marion High School senior Jake McDonald was named to the Class 3A First Team Defense at linebacker.

Saints foiled in possible 4A farewell

BETTENDORF - Maybe the Xavier Saints are right, maybe they should quit 4A football and pick on schools their own size next year.

But if Wednesday night's playoff game was their final appearance in Class 4A - and it's still a small "if" - the Saints left with a memorable performance.

Xavier and Pleasant Valley staged a terrific game on a crisp autumn night before the home-town Spartans emerged with a 33-31 victory in a Class 4A playoff opener.

The Saints recovered a loose ball near midfield with 60 seconds remaining, enough time to drive for a game-winning field goal, but the officials ruled the play was dead before the ball popped loose. Pleasant Valley kept the ball and ran out the clock.

Xavier spikers advance; face Kennedy next

DAVENPORT - Xavier rolled through Davenport Central in three sets Monday night in a Class 4A regional volleyball tournament quarterfinal at Central.

The Saints won by scores of 25-13, 25-11, 25-17.

Xavier (19-16) advances to Thursday's semifinals where it will play at No. 7 Kennedy (27-9).

Wantock's injury mars night for Linn-Mar

The Linn-Mar Lions finished the regular season with a 9-and-0 record Friday night and earned a No. 1 seed for the Class 4A playoffs, but the Lions were crying in their locker room after they defeated the Xavier Saints, 28-7.

They were not tears of happiness.

Linn-Mar tailback Mitch Wantock hurt his right ankle late in the third quarter and was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The initial report was not good.

"I'm pretty sure Wantock's ankle is broken," Coach Bob Forsyth said somberly at Saints Field.

Wantock carried the ball 14 times for 102 yards before he was injured on a running play. That raised his season total to 1,094 yards, but the 6-foot-1, 195-pound senior probably will be watching from the sidelines when the playoffs start.

Linn-Mar (9-0) will host Clinton (3-6) in the first round of the playoffs Wednesday night. Xavier (5-4) plays at Pleasant Valley (7-2) Wednesday night. Both games start at 7 p.m.
