Xavier girls boot Hempstead in OT

DUBUQUE - Quinn Hannigan scored the winning goal on a breakaway in overtime Thursday as the seventh-ranked Xavier Saints topped Dubuque  Hempstead, 2-1, in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls soccer match in Dubuque.

Hempstead took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but Addy Hoffman tied the game for the Saints with a pass from Ellie Fischer.

Mel Snow made nine saves for Xavier.

The Saints raised their record to 10-3.

Xavier boys clinch share of MVC title

Luke Duball collected three goals and three assists Thursday as the  fifth-ranked Xavier boys soccer team topped Dubuque Hempstead, 8-1, at Heco Field to clinch a share of the Mississippi Division title in the  MVC.

The Saints raised their records to 10-4 overall and finished with a  9-4 mark in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Thomas Bean, Nick Koechner, Maliki Wilson, Davis Wagner and Michael  Glaven also scored for Xavier.

Bean had two assists. Jon Jacobi, Koechner and Ty Corrigan also had assists.

Sarah Abu-Nameh makes state tennis

WATERLOO - Sarah Abu-Nameh of Xavier finished second at the Class 1A regional tennis tournament in Waterloo Thursday and qualified for the  state meet in Iowa City on June 1-3.

Abu-Nameh won three straight matches at the regional tournament, including a pair of upsets over seeded players.

Abu-Nameh topped No. 3 seed Franny Roche of Waterloo Columbus, 6-3,  6-7, 7-6 in the second round. She knocked off No. 2 seed Annika Koppes  of Iowa Falls, 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals.

Abu-Nameh lost to No. 1 seed Olivia Fain of Waterloo Columbus, 6-0,  6-1, in the championship round. The winner and runner-up both advance  to the state tournament at the Hawkeye Tennis Center at the University of Iowa.

The Xavier doubles team of Nina Marquardt and Emily Jasper finished  third at the regional tournament. They won their first two matches before losing to the No. 1 seeds from Waterloo Columbus in the  semifinals.

Marquardt and Jasper defeated the No. 3 seeds from Dike-New Hartford  in the consolation match for third, 6-2, 6-4.

Camryn McPherson of Xavier finished fourth in singles competition with  a 2-2 record.

Tallett takes 4th at state track meet

DES MOINES - Katie Tallett of Xavier placed fourth in the 3,000-meter run at the Class 3A state track meet in Des Moines Thursday.

Tallett was clocked in 10 minutes, 25.61 seconds.

The Xavier boys finished fifth in the 4x800 relay in 8 minutes, 12.85 seconds. Josh Gerke, Beau Van Berkum, Grayson Walther and Nathan Skala  shared the baton for the Saints.

The state meet continues Friday and Saturday.

Xavier is host site for Metro tourney

Xavier is one of two host sites for the 48th annual Bob Vrbicek Metro Tournament, which kicks off the high school baseball season for the  Saints, the other six schools in the Cedar Rapids Metro and Mount Vernon.

Xavier Coach Bob Cataldo's team, which finished last season at  12-23-1, will host Marion at 7 p.m. on Monday, following the 5 p.m.  contest between Jefferson and Washington at Ken Charipar Field.

Prairie is the other host site. Coach Todd Rima's Hawks, the defending Class 4A state champions, face a tough opener against traditional power Kennedy at 7 p.m. following a 4:30 p.m. contest between Mount Vernon and Linn-Mar.

Semifinal and consolation round games are set for Tuesday. The championship and third-place games will be Wednesday at Veterans Memorial Stadium with the fifth and seventh-place games to be played at Xavier.
